Former NBA basketball player and AIDS patient Nate Granger, 56, poses for a portrait outside his apartment in this picture taken July 6, 2012 at JbJ Soul House Genesis 1, an affordable development with support services for low income and special needs people including tenants living with HIV/AIDS that is fully integrated with the services of acute care AIDS facility Broadway House, New Jersey's only specialized nursing facility for HIV/AIDS just one block away. Granger, who was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 2001 weighing just 165 pounds after suffering a stroke. Confined to a hospital bed unable to walk or talk and taking as many 18 pills a day in 2001 to combat the virus, Granger now takes just one pill a day, weighs 250 pounds lives in his own apartment and calls himself "living proof that HIV/AIDS patients have a chance to survive". Their plight demonstrates the painful limits of democracy in Myanmar. While the government is pursuing reforms that promise to overhaul its health ministry and other institutions, the process is too slow to bring change to its most destitute. There are few better examples than AIDS sufferers, who due to a combination of poor education, social stigma and bureaucratic mismanagement are isolated in clinics, cut off from society. Medicine for patients are lined up for distribution at the HIV/AIDS ward of Beijing YouAn Hospital December 1, 2011. The number of new HIV/AIDS cases in China is soaring, state media said on Wednesday, citing health officials, with rates of infections among college students and older men rising. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued figures showing 48,000 new cases in China in 2011, the official Xinhua news agency said. China's government was initially slow to acknowledge the problem of HIV/AIDS in the 1990s and had sought to cover it up when hundreds of thousands of impoverished farmers in rural Henan province became infected through botched blood-selling schemes. A Kenyan woman prepares ribbons ahead of World Aids Day at Beacon of Hope centre, a non-government organization formed to address women's problem of HIV/AIDS in Nairobi, November 25, 2004. Dramatic scientific advances since HIV was first discovered 30 years ago this week mean the virus is no longer a death sentence. Thanks to tests that detect HIV early, new antiretroviral AIDS drugs that can control the virus for decades, and a range of ways to stop it being spread, 33.3 million people around the world are learning to live with HIV.
