NEWBORN OTTERS AT SYDNEY ZOO.
FILE PHOTO 15APR99 - TO ACCOMPANY FEATURE STORY ENVIRONMENT-OTTERS - Sea otters, the furry animals beloved by tourists but hunted nearly to extinction by fur traders centuries ago, are again vanishing from the Aleutian Islands. This time the culprit appears to be orca whales, which have begun eating otters, a radical change in their diet. The discovery was surprising. "There really is no indication that orcas had paid much attention to otters ... until the 1990s," one expert said. These Oriental otters, similiar to those found in Alaska, are shown at the Sydney Zoo in 1999.
