Smart Joel, 25, one of the Nigerian men arrested on charges of public display of affection with members of the same sex, poses for a photograph in his bedroom at his home in Lagos, Nigeria, February 18, 2020. "I'm always scared," he said, recounting an attack that took place last year in which a group of men called him out as the "gay guy who was arrested" and stole his phone, money and wristwatch. "It has not been easy," he said. "At some point I had to move on, not minding the stigma, the discrimination and the dirty language." REUTERS/Temilade Adelaja SEARCH "NIGERIA LGBT" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Building a refuge from homophobia in Brazil
A multi-coloured gay pride flag hangs in a corner of a bare room in an abandoned Sao Paulo art deco building that was once the headquarters of Brazil's social security agency. The room is home to several members of Brazil's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community seeking refuge from discrimination and hate crimes against LGBT people. They were invited to join some 300 squatters who have been living in the building for several months in an occupation organised by Front in the Fight for Housing, an activist group promoting rights of some 400,000 people without decent housing in Sao Paulo. Brazil has one of the world's highest rates of LGBT hate crimes, despite a reputation for sexual tolerance. The country recognised same-sex marriage in 2013 and hosts some of the world's largest gay pride festivals. REUTERS/Nacho Doce SEARCH "LGBT BRAZIL" FOR THIS STORY. POTTSVILLE, UNITED STATES
The Wider Image: Fighting for transgender rights in the U.S.
Kate Lynn Blatt once lived as a woman at home but went to work in a battery factory as a man, a painful phase in her gender transition that would later propel her to the forefront of a constitutional battle for transgender rights in America. She decided to start over, interviewing as a woman for a new job with the outdoor equipment and apparel retail chain Cabela's Inc, landing it, and finally leaving her life as a male behind. A six-year transition, starting from when she graduated high school, was finally over.
