FIFA World Cup: From the Sidelines
A combination of two pictures shows the focusing in to the illuminated Luzhniki stadium prior to the upcoming World Cup final between France and Croatia in Moscow, Russia, July 12, 2018. Kai Pfaffenbach: "I had to hold the camera overhead to reach over a piece of glass and lost focus. Autofocus wasn't really working so I decided to focus manually while using the camera screen. Before it became sharp I saw it like this and - dont know why - thought it looked cool and released the shutter once. The I focused sharp and got the next shot." As well as shooting all the matches, Reuters photographers are producing pictures showing their own quirky view from the sidelines of the World Cup." REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach

2016 Rio Olympics: Shooting Olympic history
Micronesia's Manuel Minginfel drops weights on the men's 62kg Group B weightlifting competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games in Britain July 30, 2012. Dominic Ebenbichler: "I shot the picture with a robot remote camera which was fixed on the roof and that I triggered from the ground. The difficult part is to set it up prior to each weight lifting event. You have to preset the focus and shutter speed and as the athletes are not all the same size, a little bit of luck is involved as to whether the picture will be sharp. In this case everything came together perfectly: Minginfel dropped his weights and gestured upwards, we had set the focus on just the right position and what a result!" A decontamination tap is seen at a former Regional Government HQ Nuclear bunker built by the British government during the Cold War which has come up for sale in Ballymena, Northern Ireland on February 4, 2016. It is owned by the Office of Northern Ireland's First Minister and Deputy First Minister and capable of accommodating 236 personnel for extended periods. A large range of the original fixtures and fittings are to be included in the sale. It is believed to be one of the most technically advanced bunkers built in the UK with an array of advanced life support systems. In the event of a nuclear attack, the building could operate in a shut-down capacity for 30 days. The lower floor is completely underground and the upper floor is mounded over with 1 cubic metre of earth. REUTERS/Clodagh Kilcoyne

The Wider Image: A new life for Swiss army bunkers
The view through the muzzle of a 10.5cm gun is seen at a bunker at the former artillery fort of the Swiss Army in the town of Faulensee, Switzerland October 19, 2015. Artillery fort Faulensee was in military use from 1943 to 1993 and is now open to the public as a museum. With the threat of foreign invasion a thing of the past, thousands of military bunkers and fortresses in Switzerland have been put to commercial use, from hotels to data centres, museums to cheese factories. The Swiss army has sold most of these decommissioned strongholds, but about a thousand unused bunkers remain, many still disguised as houses and barns. A shrimp is seen after being rescued by volunteers from the waters of the Rio Doce (Doce River) in Linhares, where, according to Brazil's environmental regulator IBAMA, is about to be flooded with mud after a dam, owned by Vale SA and BHP Billiton Ltd burst, Brazil, November 19, 2015. The collapse of two dams at a Brazilian mine has cut off drinking water for quarter of a million people and saturated waterways downstream with dense orange sediment that could wreck the ecosystem for years to come. Nine people were killed, 19 are still listed as missing and 500 people were displaced from their homes when the dams burst at an iron ore mine in southeastern Brazil on Nov. 5. Scientists say the sediment, which may contain chemicals used by the mine to reduce iron ore impurities, could alter the course of streams as they harden, reduce oxygen levels in the water and diminish the fertility of riverbanks and farmland where floodwater passed. According to the predictions of Brazil's environmental regulator IBAMA, the mud will touch the sea, in Espirito Santo state coast, on this Friday. REUTERS/Ricardo Moraes

A man dressed in traditional Madrid attire as "chulapo" wears the image of the Virgin of Almudena around his neck during an open-air mass to celebrate Madrid’s patron saint La Almudena Virgin in Madrid, Spain, November 9, 2015. Every 9th of November the people from Madrid remember their patron saint with a mass and a procession of the effigy of the virgin. Legend has it that the image of the Virgin of La Almudena was brought to Spain by St. James and hidden away in a niche in the city’s wall during the city’s siege by Moorish troops in the eighth century. Two centuries later the image revealed itself when the wall where it was hidden crumbled away. According to tradition, the candles on either side of the virgin were said to still be burning.
