Marchenko, unexperienced in building or operating sail boats, inspired by the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, has spent his free time on the ship for four years to achieve his childhood dreams of building a boat. A Chinese man helps local residents carry an under-construction boat that will be used in sea cucumber fishing in Dublin, March 21, 2014. As evening falls over Sierra Leone's Banana Island archipelago, bats stream from their beachside roosts to circle in their thousands over the jungle village of Dublin. Below them a struggle is playing out over an unexpected commodity - the lowly sea cucumber, a fleshy, sausage-shaped creature that scavenges for food on the seabed. While the Banana Islanders have no use for sea cucumbers, in China they are prized for their medicinal properties and as a natural aphrodisiac. Picture taken March 21, 2014. Men work on a boat on the river Clyde during a misty morning in Glasgow, Scotland January 14, 2014. The British shipbuilding industry has been through a turbulent time after defence contractor BAE Systems announced in November that it planned to lay off 1,775 ship workers across the UK. The cuts signal the end of more than 500 years of shipbuilding in Portsmouth on England's south coast. BAE is set to continue constructing ships in Glasgow, but showy entertainment venues, museums and new housing blocks have replaced many of the shipyards that once lined the city’s famous River Clyde. Long gone are the days when the area was an industrial powerhouse producing around a fifth of the world's ships. Now Glasgow promotes itself instead as a financial and commercial hub – although it still struggles with high unemployment. Picture taken January 14, 2014. A cruise ship is seen next to the construction site of the Panama Canal Expansion project on the outskirts of Colon City February 20, 2014. The Panama Canal Authority said late on Wednesday that the Spanish-led consortium expanding the major world waterway had agreed to restart work first thing on Thursday after a two-week stoppage. While workers gathered at the site on Thursday, works were still idle on Thursday afternoon. Local media said Panama's President Ricardo Martinelli pointed at the consortium, whose main partners are Spanish builder Sacyr and Italy's Salini Impregilo. The project to expand the Panama Canal, one of the world's most important shipping routes, was in doubt on Wednesday after talks between the canal administrator and a Spanish-led building consortium fell apart and work ground to a halt. Group United for the Canal, a consortium led by Spanish builder Sacyr, said in a statement that the government's canal authority had broken off talks on who will pay some $1.6 billion needed to complete the ambitious project. The Panama Canal on Wednesday rejected a proposal that it pay $1 billion to continue work on expanding the waterway, and warned the building consortium behind the project that it could bring in others to finish the job. For the past week, the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) has been fighting with the consortium led by Spanish builder Sacyr over cost overruns in the plan to install a third set of locks for one of the world's most important cargo routes. The Panama Canal Authority on Wednesday rejected as "impossible" a proposal by Italian builder Salini Impregilo that would make the authority pay an additional $1 billion (607 million pounds) to keep work on an expansion project going, and said it has a contingency plan ready. Jorge Quijano, the canal's administrator, said the authority's plan envisaged bringing in a third party to finish the expansion project if no deal is reached with the Spanish-led consortium carrying out the work.
