Potter Brenda McGinn stands outside her studio, the former Jas Boylan shoe factory which was the main employer in the area until it shut down due to The Troubles, in Mullan, Ireland, March 16, 2018. "When I came back, this would have been somewhere you would have driven through and have been quite sad. It was a decrepit looking village," said McGinn, whose Busy Bee Ceramics is one of a handful of enterprises restoring life to the community. "Now this is a revitalised, old hidden village." Shoemaker Antonio Arellano works on a red shoe he made for Pope Benedict XVI in his shop in downtown Rome February 14, 2013. Far from the designer stores on the other side of the Tiber, Arellano's shop, with its smell of glue and racks of shoe polish, is unremarkable, except for the fact that, due to its location, he counts Benedict as a loyal customer. With Benedict set to retire to an apartment inside the Vatican City, Arellano hopes he will remain his customer, even if the pope no longer visits in person. A protester holding up his shoe chants slogans against Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi in front of a barbed wire barricade guarded by a tank, outside the presidential palace in Cairo December 6, 2012. Egypt's Republican Guard restored order around the presidential palace on Thursday after fierce overnight clashes killed seven people, but passions ran high in a struggle over the country's future. Hundreds of Mursi's supporters who had camped out near the palace overnight withdrew before a mid-afternoon deadline set by the Republican Guard. A worker walks past a damaged building in an area of Bata's former shoe factory complex in Zlin, October 23, 2012, which Tomas Bata created as part of a "utopian" factory village for his workers almost a century ago. A world war and four decades of communism has taken some of the shine off Zlin and dozens of the red-brick buildings in its giant factory complex had since fell into disrepair. A restoration expert prepares to wrap a shawl, that had belonged to iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, with paper at the "Blue House" in the neighborhood of Coyoacan in Mexico City September 27, 2012. After 50 years under lock and key, hundreds of colorful dresses, shawls and accessories worn by Kahlo will be displayed by a Mexico City museum in November. Museum officials discovered the items - which include corsets, shoes and photographs - in 2004 when they entered previously sealed rooms in the "Blue House" Kahlo shared with her husband, Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, in the capital. The exhibit explores Kahlo's unique wardrobe inspired by Mexico's indigenous women with richly embroidered frocks, flowery headpieces and ornate silver jewelry, turning her into a fashion muse and earning her a spot in Vogue magazine in 1937. Marios Fragoulides repairs a shoe at a shop in Oreokastro, a suburb of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, March 7, 2012. Ties between Germany and Greece run deep. More than 300,000 Greeks reside in Germany, making them one of the biggest ethnic communities in the country. Nearly one in ten Greeks has worked, studied or lived in Germany. And roughly two million Germans spend their holidays in Greece every year, more than from any other country. Despite these links, officials from both countries are now realising that grass-roots cooperation between the countries has been virtually non-existent. Only about 30 partnerships between German and Greek towns currently exist, for example, compared to 2,000 German-French pairings. One partnership that has existed for over half a decade is between Oreokastro, a posh but increasingly troubled suburb of Thessaloniki in northern Greece, and Detmold in the west German state of North Rhine Westphalia.
