Israel will soon mark the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War, a conflict during which it captured the Old City of Jerusalem and more than two dozen Palestinian villages around it from Jordan, laying the foundations of a long-simmering dispute. In an effort to illustrate changes in the city over the past 50 years, Reuters has assembled from an Israeli government archive a collection of photos taken in Jerusalem in 1967. Reuters photographers then took pictures of the same sites as they are today. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun SEARCH "1967 WAR" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY. RIGHT WING ISRAELIS MARCH WITH FLAGS DURING JERUSALEM DAY.
Two Palestinians stand to the side (R) and watch as thousands of right-wing Israelis march down the main street in Arab East Jerusalem June 1 as they mark the "reunification" of Jerusalem during "Jerusalem Day." Tens of thousands of right-wing Israelis took part in the march this year, made more sensitive as secret peace talks are underway and there are reports that the Israeli government intends to remove tens of thousand of Jewish settlers from the West Bank. The marchers waved Israeli flags and danced while singing nationalistic songs as some Palestinians heckled them from time to time from the curb. Jerusalem Day marks the reunification of Jerusalem following the 1967 Six Day War when Israel captured the Arab part of the city from Jordan.
