Israel will soon mark the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War, a conflict during which it captured the Old City of Jerusalem and more than two dozen Palestinian villages around it from Jordan, laying the foundations of a long-simmering dispute. In an effort to illustrate changes in the city over the past 50 years, Reuters has assembled from an Israeli government archive a collection of photos taken in Jerusalem in 1967. Reuters photographers then took pictures of the same sites as they are today. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun SEARCH "1967 WAR" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY. A right-wing Jewish woman (R) carries an Israeli flag as she goes through Jaffa Gate the main western entrance to Jerusalem's Old City June 1 during the "Jerusalem Day" march. Tens of thousands of right-wing Israelis took part in the march this year, made more sensitive as secret peace talks are underway and there are reports that the Israeli government intends to remove tens of thousand of Jewish settlers from the West Bank. Jerusalem Day marks the reunification of Jerusalem following the 1967 Six Day War when Israel captured the Arab part of the city from Jordan.

An elderly Palestinian woman sits on the curb watching as tens of thousands of right-wing Jews carrying the Israeli flag pass through Arab East Jerusalem at the Flowers Gate late June 1 during the annual "Jerusalem Day" march. This year's parade was more sensitive than in recent years due to the approaching Final Status agreement and secretive peace talks underway amid reports that the Israeli government intends to remove tens of thousand of Jewish settlers from the West Bank in order to make peace with the Palestinians. Many of the marchers danced while singing nationalistic songs as some Palestinians heckled them from time to time from the curb. A right-wing Jew (L) and a Palestinian make the same gesture as they hurl insults at each other as tempers flare outside the Orient House, headquarters of the PLO (Palestine Liberation organization) in Arab East Jerusalem, June 1. A handful of right-wing Israelis marched to the PLO building and began shouting "Arabs Out!" as they mark Jeruslem Day claiming the entire city as Jewish. Israeli police arrived and broke up minor scuffles and arrested this Jewish young man. Jerusalem Day marks the unification of Jerusalem after the 1967 Six Days War, something the Palestinian polulation has always disputed, claiming Arab East Jerusalem is "occupied territory."
