Skate and other fishes are caught in net as they are brought aboard the Whitby Rose in the North Sea
Skate and other fishes are caught in net as they are brought aboard the Whitby Rose in the North Sea, off the coast of Whitby, northern England February 28, 2013. Whitby, once a busy fishing port, is now a shadow of its former self. Only 200 people are now employed in fishing, and the fleet is down to just a few boats. Global warming has expanded fish habitats northwards, with fish stocks sometimes disappearing for weeks on end. Boats return from sea with largely empty nets, and the atmosphere is sour. Often schools of fish then reappear unpredictably, resulting in bumper catches and causing much jubilation - but then E.U. quotas kick in and force fishermen to dump excess catch in the sea to avoid hefty E.U. Fines. Picture taken February 28, 2013. REUTERS/Dylan Martinez (BRITAIN - Tags: SOCIETY ENVIRONMENT BUSINESS EMPLOYMENT ANIMALS MARITIME FOOD)

A man fishes next to signs stating that people should not throw rubbish and not fish, swim or skate on a polluted canal in central Beijing June 12, 2012. China is now the world's second largest economy, but hundreds of millions of its people still rely on fouled water that will cost billions of dollars to clean. Growing cities, overuse of fertilizers, and factories that heedlessly dump wastewater have degraded China's water supplies to the extent that half the nation's rivers and lakes are severely polluted. A sign for White Park Rink reads "No Skating Today" at White's Pond in Concord, New Hampshire January 6, 2012. Unusually mild winter weather is spoiling the fun for hockey players, skaters and ice fisherman across the Northeast as officials are warning them to stay off uncommonly thin ice. Fish and game officials in several northern states have issued advisories in recent days, saying ice conditions are unsafe on lakes that typically wear a winter coating of 10-inch-thick (25 cm) ice. WOMAN WALKS ON THIN ICE IN BEIJING
A mother retrieves her child's school bag while a friend grips her belt as a safety measure after an after school prank left the backpack stranded on thin ice covering a central city lake December 10. Most lakes in China's national capital freeze over but this early in the winter, despite consistent sub-zero overnight temperatures, the ice has yet to thicken. Frozen lakes provide citizens with a wealth of recreation including sledding, ice skating and ice fishing.
