Bulgarian Muslims hold winter marriage ceremony
Bulgarian Muslim bride Kimile Avdinova has make-up applied to her face during her wedding ceremony in the village of Ribnovo, in the Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria, January 2, 2022. The remote mountain village of Ribnovo in southwest Bulgaria has kept its traditional winter marriage ceremony alive despite decades of Communist persecution, followed by poverty that forced many men to seek work abroad. The wedding ritual was resurrected with vigour among the Pomaks - Slavs who converted to Islam under Ottoman rule. The highlight of the ceremony is the painting of the bride's face, where in a private rite open only to female in-laws, her face is covered in thick, chalky white paint and decorated with colourful sequins. Reduced to a string of stagnant mustard-coloured pools, fouled in places with pesticide runoff and stinking with the rotting carcasses of cattle and fish, the Darling River is running dry. The parched earth of Australia's longest waterway, if tributaries are included, is in the grip of the continent's most severe drought in a century. At Menindee, 830 km west of Sydney, despair has turned to anger as residents blame the government for exacerbating the drought by drawing down river water in 2017 for irrigation and other uses downstream. Locals now avoid using tap water for drinking and washing babies and children, saying it has caused skin irritation, and prefer boxed and bottled water instead. School children stand barefoot in a queue waiting for jiggers in their feet to be removed during a medical outreach project conducted by Sole Hope in Kalebera village, Jinja district, eastern Uganda August 6, 2015. The problem of jigger parasites, female sand fleas that burrow their way under skin, is widespread in the eastern, northern and northeastern parts of Uganda. Left untreated, the parasite can lead to secondary infections that can be fatal. NGO Sole Hope works with local and international volunteers to treat sufferers, removing the parasites either with safety pins or razor blades. Encouraging people to cover their feet is part of the battle against the parasite; treatment includes a free pair of shoes as very few of those affected are able to afford even sandals. The 52-year-old chemist and ecologist was born in Senegal, but dislikes the attention people pay to his origin. "The focus on my skin colour does bother me, because I expect a normal situation, that people talk to me as someone who is fighting for a seat in parliament in order to be a worthy representative of my region," he said in a Reuters TV interview. At the same time he highlights his adopted home country's shortfalls in providing equal opportunities to non-native Germans. "The fact that my candidacy has drawn so much attention has little to do with me, it is due to the fact that the representation of people with a migration background, their participation in society and politics … is much less developed than in other immigration countries," he said.
