Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
A Turkana tribeswoman reacts after an accidental fire of a shelter in Turkana settlement in Ilemi Triangle, Kenya, July 15, 2019. Reuters Photographer Goran Tomasevic: "First, the lookouts saw a footprint, then a suspected spy from a rival ethnic group, scuttling off into the bush. Expecting an attack, young men grabbed their guns and mothers grabbed their children - there are few state security forces in this remote area of northern Kenya. The Ilemi Triangle, a disputed sliver of land along the border with Ethiopia and South Sudan, is the northernmost tip of Turkana, Kenya's poorest county. A series of deadly clashes between the community and other ethnic groups that they said had crossed from South Sudan have put people on edge. Farmers and nomads frequently clash over limited resources. Livestock is the most important currency here. The danger is real. I saw several places scattered with skulls or bones with shredded clothing. Families drink from the same muddy pools as their livestock. There are few schools Ð children instead help herd cows to nearby watering holes. Chief Eipa Choro said the community felt abandoned by the government; clean water from an aid group's borehole was two hours' drive away. The nearest police station several hours away. We weren't attacked during the time I spent with them, but each time we moved, the community sent out scouts to secure the way and try to spot potential ambushes from cattle raiders. Raids can be a disaster for a community." REUTERS/Goran Tomasevic/File Photo SEARCH "POY STORIES 2019" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

De-mining teams searches for landmines in the desert east of Basra province, April 1, 2015. In Iraq's vast southern desert, de-mining teams are working to remove millions of Saddam-era landmines and explosive ordnance that litter Iraq's southern giant oil fields, hampering the country's oil boom and delaying investment. A sign is pictured at the perimeter of the former Nazi German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz in Oswiecim January 26, 2015. Ceremonies to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the camp will take place on January 27, with some 300 former Auschwitz prisoners taking part in the commemoration event. Nazi Germany built the Auschwitz camp in 1940 as a place of incarceration for the Poles. From 1942, it became the largest site of extermination of the Jews from Europe. In Auschwitz, Nazis killed at least 1.1 million people, mainly Jews, but also Poles, Roma, Soviet prisoners of war and prisoners of other ethnicities. On January 27, 1945 the camp was liberated by the Red Army soldiers. REUTERS/Laszlo Balogh (POLAND - Tags: ANNIVERSARY SOCIETY CONFLICT)

A monkey skull, the bones and horns of mountain goats, python skin and other animal products and herbs are seen on display at a shop which also treats illnesses using the animal parts, in a market in Maungdaw town in northern Rakhine State November 11, 2014. The market is one of the few places where the Rohingya Muslim and Rakhine Buddhist communities meet. For years, tens of thousands of Rohingya Muslim boat people have fled this remote corner of western Myanmar for nearby countries. Ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, bitter rivals of the Rohingya, are also leaving Rakhine State to seek jobs in Malaysia and Thailand. The exodus reflects a wider economic malaise. Myanmar's quasi-civilian government has launched many reforms since taking power in 2011, but hasn't created enough jobs. Picture taken November 11, 2014. The Jolly Roger flies from a house in the Loyalist Ballymacash estate on the outskirts of the city of Lisburn August 18, 2014. The flag is flown as a warning to non-residents that they are entering a Loyalist Paramilitary controlled area. In Belfast, the flags of Israel and the Palestinians are potent symbols of conflict, but they divide Catholics and Protestants rather than Jews and Muslims. In the complex web of alliances that underpins Northern Ireland politics, the star of David has been adopted by pro-British Loyalists, mainly Protestants, many of whom sympathise with Israel's struggle against Islamic militants. Flying the green, black and red of flag of the Palestinian territories, meanwhile, is a sign of support for Catholic Irish Nationalism and their aspiration for a united Ireland against what many see as a British occupation. The flags are among dozens that have been adopted by the working class Catholic and Protestant areas that have for decades been at the focus of sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. Skulls are placed behind glass at a memorial stupa made with the bones of more than 8,000 victims of the Khmer Rouge regime at Choeung Ek, a "Killing Fields" site located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh August 6, 2014. Cambodia's young population is very aware of its grim history, with almost every family suffering losses. Most Cambodians still want justice and to see the U.N.-backed court find the recalcitrant Nuon Chea, Pol Pot's right-hand man, and ex-President Khieu Samphan, guilty of crimes against humanity, but the court has been mired in disputes, resignations, funding shortages and accusations of political interference and has to date delivered just one verdict. The court will deliver verdicts for Noun Chea and Khieu Samphan on August 7, 2014. REUTERS/Damir Sagolj (CAMBODIA - Tags: POLITICS CIVIL UNREST CRIME LAW TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)
