Rohingya refugees carry their child as they walk through water after crossing the border by boat through the Naf River in Teknaf, Bangladesh, September 7, 2017. Reuters photographer Mohammad Ponir Hossain: "I walked around for an hour on the muddy and very slippery path to get to the river bank. When I reached it I heard the sound of people who had arrived by boats. Because of the mangroves I couldn't see them properly. After some time I saw more than hundred people come out of the mangroves and start walking into the water with children, elderly people and their belongings. Due to low tide boats were unable to reach to the dry land. This Rohingya couple with a child had to get off the boat into a mangrove first; then walk through the water to reach dry land." Pictures of the Year: Persecuted Rohingya Muslims flee violence in Myanmar
Rohingya refugees arrive to the Bangladeshi side of the Naf River after crossing the border from Myanmar, in Palang Khali, Bangladesh, October 16, 2017. Reuters photographer Jorge Silva: "We had been expecting this massive crossing of people along the Naf river from Myanmar for some days. Before dawn I started walking through the rice field in Palang Khali. After almost two hours walking, a loud murmur indicated they were thousands of people, all wet, caked in mud, exhausted, starving, and in a state of panic. People using the very last of their energy to survive. They crossed the river during the night, paying smugglers to carry them in their boats. I got to one of the several points where they were disembarking. They had to walk across the mangrove with water up to their waists, to reach the slippery embankments of the rice field, where they would be safe and could rest. The scene was overwhelming. The sound of splashes on the water, shouting, babies and children crying, created an atmosphere of despair that is very hard to forget." A Syrian man sleeps at a playground in the resort town of Bodrum, Turkey, September 4, 2015. Turkish authorities stopped 57 people trying to cross to the Greek island of Kos on Thursday night, as migrants trying to reach Europe remained undeterred by the drowning of two toddlers this week on the same route. Images of the tiny body of 3-year old Aylan Kurdi washed up on a beach near the Turkish resort of Bodrum sparked a global outpouring of sympathy, and shocked European governments into renewed focus on tackling the migrant crisis. But the death of Kurdi - along with his 5-year old brother Galip, his mother and nine others - has done little to deter migrants, many refugees from war in the Middle East, from taking to small boats for the 4 km (2 mile) nocturnal crossing to Kos from Bodrum. Coastguards halted three boats carrying 57 Syrians, Afghans and Pakistanis late on Thursday, impounding the vessels and taking the passengers back to Turkey, where they spent the night sleeping under blankets in the yard of the coastguard building. Carlos Aguilez, a dog handler, points to a dog at the D Pet Hotel in New York December 5, 2013. Christmas travel season is one of the busiest times for America's 14,000 boarding facilities and all of the at home pet caretakers. And as Americans increasingly identify animals as members of their families, pet care has undergone an upgrade. Today, many pet hotels offer everything from 24/7 video-cams (so owners can see their pets at all times) to group play sessions and hikes and doggy paddle swims. For a price, of course. U.S. pet owners are on track to spend $2.1 billion on pet boarding expenses in 2013, according to market research firm IBISWorld. While the International Boarding & Pet Services Association estimates the average kennel stay at $30 a day, that number can go much higher, especially on the east and west coasts. At D Pet Hotels in Manhattan's uber-hip Chelsea neighborhood, a basic suite costs $84 a night, while a unit with a full sized human bed goes for $200.
