A paramedic (L) helps a woman remove her smock gown after a cataract surgery at Qadr hospital's operation room in Tangerang, Indonesia's Banten province, October 17, 2009. A total of 67 villagers received new lenses for their eyes as part of a joint initiative by the Indonesian Lions Club Foundation and the Indonesian Eye Specialists Association (Perdami)
offering free cataract surgery for the poor. Indonesia has the highest record of blindness in Asia, with around four million visually-impaired people, according to a Perdami official. A cataract operation costs between 5 million to 10 million Indonesian rupiah ($500 to $1000) and the initiative helps conduct cataract surgery for those who are not able to afford medical treatment. Members of a gay rights group wear costume church smocks reading "Believe in gay" during a protest outside Saint Peter's square in Rome December 6, 2008. Gay rights groups and newspaper editorials this week condemned the Vatican for its decision to oppose a proposed U.N. resolution calling on governments worldwide to de-criminalise homosexuality. The row erupted after the Vatican's permanent observer to the United Nations told a French Catholic news agency the Holy See would oppose the resolution, which France is due to propose later this month on behalf of the 27-member European Union. Six-month-old St Bernards, Chibi (meaning small in Japanese, R) and Jumbo perform a popular Japanese dance called "dojosukui" as they sport kimono smocks and scarves on stage at a dog theme park in Moriyama, western Japan. After two months of intensive rehearsing, Chibi and Jumbo have learned the dance, traditionally performed by fishermen, miming the successful scooping up of fish with a shallow basket. An animal trainer came up with the idea of a dog theme park which would allow Japanese families to take a break from their cramped apartments to spend quality time with a selection of man's best friends.
