A military vehicle for the Lebanese army stands in Sunni Muslim Bab al-Tebbaneh neighbourhood in Tripoli, northern Lebanon April 9, 2014. For two weeks now, the rifles have been silent along Syria Street in Lebanon's Tripoli, an area shot up so often that even memorial posters of men killed just a few months ago are speckled with bullet holes. Soldiers patrol quiet streets where gunmen used to fight day and night - part of the Lebanese authorities' most serious effort yet to contain spillover from Syria's civil war since the three-year-old conflict began in its much larger neighbour. But while many in Tripoli, 30 km (20 miles) south of the Syrian border, have welcomed what they see as an overdue clampdown, they also worry it could falter under renewed political bickering and a backlash by radical Sunni militants. A couple of months ago, Adivasi's infant son fell sick and his eyes filled with pus. By the time the infection cleared up, Deepak's pupils had turned a pearly white. He is now permanently blind. It did not help matters that Deepak is malnourished, as are half of all young children in India. His belly is swollen, his dry skin speckled with dark dots, and his hair is thin and yellowing. Had he not been so starved of vitamins, he probably would have suffered only an itchy but harmless bout of pink eye. To match feature INDIA-MALNUTRITION/ REUTERS/Raj Patidar (INDIA)

This image mosaic taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit's panoramic camera shows a new slice of martian real estate southwest of the rover's landing site. The landscape shows little variation in local topography, though a narrow peak only seven to eight kilometres away is visible on the horizon. A circular depression, similar to the one dubbed Sleepy Hollow, can be seen in the foreground. Compared to the Viking and Pathfinder landing sites, the terrain at Gusev Crater, Spirit's landing site, is flat and speckled with a sparse array of rocks. The picture was released by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California Janaury 10, 2004.

WOMAN NESTLES BIRD EGG IN CLEAVAGE.
Anne-Mette Smette, a 58 year old former hospital midwife, displays a bird's egg nestling in her cleavage May 24 after a farmer found the object, believed to belong to a curlew, apparently abandoned last week. Smette, who expects the speckled green and brown egg to hatch in several weeks time, had tried to get a hen to incubate the egg but the bird refused to accept it. She aims to keep it in her cleavage, even when sleeping at night, to keep it warm and had instructed her husband, Knut, not to touch her breasts for fear of cracking the egg.
