The Wider Image: China's slowing economy: the view from the Henan heartland
Considered the cradle of Chinese civilization, the central province of Henan and its 100 million-strong population typifies China's transformative yet often tumultuous economic ascent. Long the sort of impoverished backwater that people left in search of better lives, Henan has in recent years enjoyed the fruits of an economic boom that has raised incomes and given people a taste of middle class lifestyles and aspirations. Zhengzhou, the provincial capital, was transformed into a transportation and logistics hub complete with a futuristic skyline and luxury malls, crisscrossed with freeways and connected by high-speed rail to more affluent cities like Beijing and Shanghai. A vast Foxconn factory in the city, employs almost a quarter of a million people and churns out most of the world's iPhones. However, the gains achieved in Henan and other inland provinces appear fragile, as living and housing costs rise, and China's economy slows. That is threatening the aspirations of a generation of young Chinese in cities like Zhengzhou. The slowdown also undermines one of the government's main hopes for transforming the economy by spurring domestic spending, as well as spreading wealth to the interior of China, which has long lagged the coastal regions that gave birth to China's four-decades-long economic boom. Reuters reporters travelled to six cities across Henan, from bustling Zhengzhou to the smog-choked industrial hub of Anyang in the north, interviewing dozens of residents from all walks to life to document how the economic slowdown feels in the heart of China. The Wider Image: Polarizing Brazil election forces women off the fence
In Brazil's most polarizing election in decades, women have long held the decisive swing vote, with a quarter of the female electorate up for grabs just a month ago - twice the undecided rate among Brazilian men. Days ahead of Sunday's deciding vote, however, right-wing front-runner Jair Bolsonaro has pushed them off the fence, splitting Brazilian women along deep fault lines. On one side, he has won the backing of women fed up with crime, corruption scandals and economic recession under the leftist Workers Party, represented by his rival Fernando Haddad. On the other, women say they cannot bring themselves to vote for a man with a track record of offending minorities and women, including telling a fellow lawmaker she was too ugly to rape and defending the gender pay gap. The latest survey from pollster Ibope shows a close divide, with 44 percent of women supporting Bolsonaro and 40 percent for Haddad. Men have broken overwhelmingly for Bolsonaro, who has the support of 56 percent, against just 36 percent for Haddad. The largest demonstrations against Bolsonaro in recent months have been led by women, gathering tens of thousands of protesters under the slogan "ele nao" or "not him." Yet their campaign on social media and in the streets of major cities spurred a backlash from Bolsonaro supporters declaring "ele sim" or "yes, him." A Picture and its Story: Photographers' best World Cup shots
Soccer Football - World Cup - Group F - South Korea vs Germany - Kazan Arena, Kazan, Russia - June 27, 2018 Germany's Mario Gomez, Mats Hummels, Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller react. Dylan Martinez: "What can I say about this picture? It's not quite perfect, as it works best as a vertical, and since when was the world vertical? Still, I do like the geometry of it and I rarely get to photograph from the 'tribune', so when I got the chance I jumped. And seriously, how much fun? - ItÕs like watching it on TV. And then, of course I got to see one of my favourite players, Son Heung-min of Spurs, score the winning goal for South Korea and send Germany home. It was a big story, a big moment, and although IÕm not usually one for schadenfruede, as any genuine sports fan will tell you, thatÕs pretty much the whole point of the World Cup." The Wider Image: Parkland survivors keep memory of shooting alive
Hundreds of seniors in red caps and gowns at their Florida high school graduation ceremony on June 3 listened intently to speakers who told them what they could achieve. "Don't let anything stop you," one said. But when student Joaquin Oliver's name was read out by the principal, it was his parents Manuel Oliver and Patricia Padauy who walked onto the stage to receive his diploma. Joaquin, 17, was one of the 17 students and staff members killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14, 2018. The massacre by a former student who stormed classrooms on Valentine's Day with an assault rifle has spurred unprecedented activism by victims' families to prevent future gun violence. "This Should Be My Son," read the words on the bright yellow t-shirt Patricia wore for the ceremony at an indoor arena in the nearby city of Sunrise. The Wider Image: Parents of Nigeria's abducted girls cherish keepsakes
Kachalla Bukar's eyes filled with tears when he looked at a blue plastic basket containing his 14-year-old daughter's belongings. Aisha Kachalla is one of 110 girls abducted on Feb. 19 by suspected Boko Haram militants from her school in Dapchi, a dusty, remote town in the northeast Nigerian state of Yobe. The basket contains noodles, underwear, clothes and other items her parents packed to make her life at boarding school more comfortable - before it was interrupted by men shouting and brandishing weapons. Now those mundane items are the only connection he has to his daughter's recent life while he and other parents wait for news. "When we went to school on Tuesday she was not among the girls that have been found," he said, holding up a pink dress that was part of her school uniform. For the father-of-six, the box and its contents are keepsakes to be cherished but also a reminder of the moment he learned his second eldest daughter was missing. "Her colleagues who have returned then gave us our daughter's school box with her personal belongings. That was when we realized our daughter is actually missing," he said. The Dapchi abductions may be one of the largest since Boko Haram took more than 270 schoolgirls from the northeastern town of Chibok in 2014. That case sparked an online campaign and spurred several governments into action to try and find them. REUTERS/Afolabi Sotunde SEARCH "DAPCHI PARENTS" FOR THIS STORY. Though it is banned in many parts of the world, cockfighting is favored throughout the Caribbean and in Cuba its popularity is growing. Last year, Ciego de Avila opened its first official cockfighting arena with 1,000 seats, the largest in Cuba, to the dismay of animal rights activists who see it as a step backward. Cockfighting is a blood sport because of the harm cocks do to each other in cockpits, exacerbated by metal spurs that can be attached to birds' own spurs. After the 1959 revolution, Cuba cracked down on cockfighting as part of a ban on gambling, recalls Ferrel. Over the years that stance has softened. Official arenas have opened and hidden arenas are tolerated as long as there are no brawls. REUTERS/Alexandre Meneghini SEARCH "CUBA COCKFIGHTING" FOR THIS STORY.
