A Picture and its Story: Yemeni father mourns baby girl who died of starvation
ATTENTION EDITORS - VISUAL COVERAGE OF SCENES OF INJURY OR DEATH Saleh al-Faqeh held the wasted arm of his baby girl as she took her last breath on Thursday at the malnutrition ward of the main hospital in Yemen's capital Sanaa. Four-month-old Hajar al-Faqeh reached the al-Sabeen hospital last week from Saada province, one of thousands of Yemeni children suffering from malnutrition in a country that has been pushed to the brink of famine by more than three years of war. "She has spent two months in a hospital in Saada, but we had to bring her to Sanaa," her father said. Saada province is a stronghold of Iran-aligned Houthi rebels who have been fighting a Saudi-backed government for nearly four years in a war that has killed 10,000. Meritxell Relano, the UNICEF Representative in Yemen, said in September that more than 11 million children, or about 80 percent of the country's population under the age of 18, were facing the threat of food shortages, disease, displacement and acute lack of access to basic social services. The Faqeh family braved a dangerous journey along mountain roads where air strikes from the Saudi-led coalition are frequent. Fouad al-Reme, a nurse in al-Sabeen hospital, said Hajar was conscious when she came to the hospital but she suffered low oxygen levels. "She was like skin on bones, her body was emaciated," he said. A Picture and its Story: 'At the doors of starvation:' siege chokes Damascus suburbs
A tightening siege has pushed people to the verge of famine in the eastern suburbs of Damascus, residents and aid workers say, bringing desperation to the only major rebel enclave near the Syrian capital. At two and a half years old, Hala al-Nufi weighs less than five kilos (12 pounds). She suffers from a metabolic disorder, but a lack of adequate food has made the case extreme. Hala, her eyes hollow and her translucent skin stretching over her tiny bones, had gotten sicker in recent months, her parents said. They worry she will not survive the siege. The Wider Image: A daughter's freedom weighed against her siblings' lives
As the village wells dried up and her livestock died in the scorched scrubland of southern Somalia, Abdir Hussein had one last chance to save her family from starvation: the beauty of her 14-year-old daughter, Zeinab. Last year, an older man offered $1,000 for her dowry, enough to take her extended family to Dollow, a Somali town on the Ethiopian border where international aid agencies are handing out food and water to families fleeing a devastating drought. Zeinab refused. "I would rather die. It is better that I run into the bush and be eaten by lions," said the slender dark-eyed girl in a high, soft voice. "Then we will stay and starve to death and the animals will eat all of our bones," her mother shot back. The exchange, related to Reuters by the teenager and her mother, is typical of the choices facing Somali families after two years of poor rains. Crops withered and the white bones of livestock are scattered across the Horn of Africa nation. REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra SEARCH "ZEINAB DOLLOW" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. The Wider Image: Living on a mountaintop
In villages perched high on a mountain in Western Yemen, residents are a safe distance from a conflict raging throughout most of the country but have had to turn the clock back on their lifestyles by centuries. Eighteen months of civil war and shortages have deprived Yemen's 28 million people of electricity and fuel - dinner is cooked on an open fire and dawn light heralds a the start of work in the fields. But far from a country idyll, starvation and a lack of vital medicine have turned sunny days in the crisp green hills into a medieval struggle for survival. People in the Jafariya district of the western Raymah province must now haul basic goods uphill by foot, donkey and even a pulley-powered cable car soaring between peaks. Oscar is pictured at the Famproa dogs shelter in Los Teques, Venezuela August 18, 2016. His name is a reference to Oscar Mayer, the hot dog brand. "He has spent many years living in the shelter, but is super grumpy, barks a lot, and if he does not know someone he will attempt to bite. Oscar does not like to interact with other dogs and the only way to see him happy is when somebody gives him bread to eat or when he plays with plastic bottle," said Maria Silva who takes care of dogs at the shelter.
