Tayyibe Demirel, 64, who is refusing to sell her olive grove to coal mining companies, rests next to a stove in her clothes shop in Turgut village near southwestern town of Yatagan in Mugla province, Turkey March 2, 2021. Behind Demirel's olive groves lies a vast, grey expanse, stripped bare by a coal mine eating into the rolling hillside. On the horizon, heavy smoke billows from three giant chimneys of the power plant by the town of Yatagan. "All the land around will be dug and plundered, and the olive grove will be stuck in the middle," Demirel said. "I object. I will continue my struggle, and seek my rights. A feral cat, that was disturbed by noise as he ate cat food left out by Sankae Kato, jumps out of a hole from a storage shed on Kato's property, at a restricted zone in Namie, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, February 21, 2021. Kato looks after 41 cats in his home and another empty building on his property and leaves food for feral cats in a storage shed he heats with a paraffin stove. A decade ago, he stayed behind to rescue cats abandoned by neighbours who fled the radiation clouds belching from the nearby Fukushima nuclear plant. He won't leave. "I want to make sure I am here to take care of the last one," Kato said. "After that I want to die, whether that be a day or hour later." KNYAZHYTSY, Belarus
Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
Belarusian shepherd Alexey Usikov, 33, drives a horse-drawn carriage equipped with a battery, head lights and a small potbelly stove, which he crafted out of an old Audi-80 and which he jokingly calling it an Audi-40 as he used only a half of the car, in the village of Knyazhytsy, Belarus May 28, 2020. Reuters photographer Vasily Fedosenko: "Cowherd Alexey Usikov often has to brave inclement weather while tending to his herd at a collective farm in eastern Belarus. On a neighbour's suggestion, he decided to convert his old Audi 80 into an 'all-weather' cart by connecting half of it to a horse-drawn shaft. The result? A rough-and-ready home on wheels that protects Usikov from the rain. His 'Audi-40', as he jokingly calls the improvised half of the original car, is equipped with a battery, headlights, radio, and even a tiny potbelly stove that provides warmth and on which he makes coffee. Usikov has welded the cart's body where necessary, repainted it, and lubricates and pumps the wheels. "It gives you pleasure to ride a well-maintained cart," he said. I wanted one photo that would show the inimitable self-made horse-drawn carriage against the backdrop of Usikov's village. Such a moment presented itself at the end of his shift, when he handed over cow-tending duties to his brother and went home. A steep hill allowed for a top-down shot capturing the two horses pulling the unusual vehicle past an ordinary village house." The Wider Image: China's slowing economy: the view from the Henan heartland
Jiejie Li, wife of 32-year-old fisherman Sun Lianxi, prepares food on a wood stove in their makeshift dwelling at the Yellow River embankment of on the northern outskirts of Zhengzhou, Henan province, China, February 21, 2019. For generations, the Suns plied their fishing boats up and down the Huai and Yellow Rivers, living off their daily catch. Like their grandfather and father before them, brothers Sun Genxi, 44, and Sun Lianxi were born on a fishing boat. China's economic ascent has tantalised the brothers. "These high-rise buildings have nothing to do with me. They're for others, not me," Lianxi says. "We don't have any part in it." The Suns were owners of a large houseboat, enough to accommodate their clan of 17 spanning four generations under one weather-beaten roof. But as part of a broad-ranging environmental crackdown, local authorities in 2017 took over the houseboat in the name of minimising water pollution and over-fishing. The Suns now live in tents of tarpaulin and plastic sheets by a floating bridge on the banks of the Yellow River, reduced to fishing from a small dinghy. "Who knows, my son one day can maybe become something," Sun Lianxi said. "But we have to break out of this cycle." REUTERS/Thomas Peter SEARCH "CHINA HENAN" FOR THIS STORY. Tamara Baikov, 69, looks into a stove inside her hut in a forest near the village of Yukhovichi, Belarus, February 7, 2018. Tamara and her husband have lived for more than a quarter of a century in a primitive hut in a forest. They used to live in Yukhovichi, nearest village, as farmers, keeping cows and poultry. But dwelling near other people did not suit them. "There are no people - there is no conflict," she said. REUTERS/Vasily Fedosenko SEARCH "BELARUS FARM" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Skiing's origins in China's remote west
For much of the year, skiing is the only way to get around Khom, a village of wooden cabins heated by earthen stoves, five hours' drive from the nearest major town in the northern Altay region of Xinjiang. The design of skis have barely changed for centuries. The bottom of the skis are covered with horse-hide and shoes are tied on with leather rope. The direction of the horse fur allows the skis to slide forward, while preventing them from slipping backward when traveling uphill. Cave paintings discovered in Altay - today home to a mixture of ethnic Tuvans and Kazakhs - show rows of figures standing on what look like skis, with herds of animals running below them. Archaeologists have dated the paintings as 10,000 to 30,000 years old, according to Chinese ski historian Shan Zhaojian. That would date them as much older than archaeological findings of skiing in Russia, cited by the International Ski Federation, the sport's governing body, as coming from 6,300 to 5,000 BC.
