A street sign on Wall Street outside the New York Stock Exchange September 18, 2007. The U.S. Federal Reserve on Tuesday slashed benchmark U.S. interest rates by a half-percentage point in a bold bid to buffer the economy from a housing slump and related financial market turbulence. The unanimous decision by the central bank's Federal Open Market Committee took the overnight federal funds rate down to 4.75 percent, its lowest level since May of last year. The Fed also lowered the discount rate it charges for direct loans to banks by a half-point to 5.25 percent. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid (UNITED STATES)

A car with no licence plates drives along a main road in Bejing August 17, 2007. Beijing embarked on a four-day experiment on Friday to see if taking 1.3 million cars off the city's streets will substantially reduce air pollution at next year's Beijing Olympics. The plan involves drivers with an even final digit on their licence plate facing fines if they take to the city roads today and Sunday, while odd numbered cars are banned Saturday and Monday. Weeds and tall grass grow through an abandoned sidewalk near the area

25 years ago, Love Canal was America's most notorious toxic dump, where
leaking poisons from waste dumped by the Hooker Chemical Company (now
Occidental Chemical) forced thousands to flee their homes and awoke the
nation to the dangers of pollution. The U.S. government eventually declared
emergency evacuations of the area in 1978 and 1980, and relocated more than
800 families and reimbursed them for their homes, which were destroyed.

Locals stroll past an old 'traction' car in a quiet street in Colonia del Sacramento, 360 kms south of Uruguay's capital Montevideo. Colonia was built by the Portuguese 300 years ago on the coast of Uruguay as a bastion against the Spanish colony on the other side of the River Plate in what is now Argentina. In recognition of its beauty and historic value, Colonia was named part of humanity's cultural heritage by UNESCO in 1995, but some fear a planned $1 billion bridge to Argentina could disturb its peace and quiet.
