The Wider Image: From crime to baking - ex gang members seek peace
Gang life in the poor Central American country of El Salvador is hard, but for a dozen former members of the feared 18th Street Gang, building a new life outside is no less difficult. Wilfredo Gomez joined a gang as an adolescent in Los Angeles, the U.S. city to which his parents emigrated. He said he was enticed by the guns, the girls and the camaraderie of gang life. He wound up in jail before being deported back to his native country. With few links to El Salvador, he quickly returned to gang life. A 10-year jail sentence for stealing an Uzi submachine gun gave him time to reckon with his choices. REUTERS/Jose Cabezas SEARCH "CABEZAS BAKERY" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. Steve Parker, a former Marine who now makes accessories for firearms, is seen holding his KRISS Vector submachine gun in his home office in Fayetteville, North Carolina September 26, 2014. It's not uncommon in Fayetteville to hear of soldiers who have served multiple year-long tours of duty, returning again and again to guerilla-style wars with no clearly defined front lines. Some 5,000 troops from Fort Bragg are still fighting and dying in Afghanistan, even though that war long ago slipped off the front pages of U.S. newspapers. With one war over and another winding down, more soldiers are back in Fayetteville now than during the height of the deployments between 2008 and 2011.?Still, President Obama has already sent 1,600 Special Operations commandos back to Iraq. Americans are flying helicopter missions ("boots in the air") and military leaders have hinted that the conflict could soon require more boots on the ground. Picture taken September 26, 2014. Less than three months before Rio welcomes tens of thousands of foreign soccer fans for the World Cup, the attacks cast new doubts on government efforts to expel gangs from slums using a strong police presence. Residents react as policemen take position during an operation in the Mare slums complex in Rio de Janeiro March 26, 2014. Brazil will deploy federal troops to Rio de Janeiro to help quell a surge in violent crime following attacks by drug traffickers on police posts in three slums on the north side of the city, government officials said on Friday.
Less than three months before Rio welcomes tens of thousands of foreign soccer fans for the World Cup, the attacks cast new doubts on government efforts to expel gangs from slums using a strong police presence. The city will host the Olympics in 2016. REUTERS/Ricardo Moraes (BRAZIL - Tags: CRIME LAW TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)
