SULAYMANIYAH.
An Iraqi Kurd shepherd describes where he has found unexploded mines
while walking his sheep in the hills south of Sulaymaniyah on January
14, 2003. After four decades of intermittent conflict, northern Iraq's
Kurds brace themselves for another possible war between the United
States and Bagdad over allegations of weapons of mass destruction. The
mountainous region is already littered with millions of mines and
unexploded ordnance which have killed nearly 4,500 people in the last
10 years. REUTERS/Caren Firouz

An Iraqi Kurd holds a bundle of dinars on the trading staircase of the
currency exchange in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq January 12, 2003.In time of war
the U.S. dollar is usually a safe haven, but in Iraqi Kurdistan the
greenback is taking a battering from the tattered and torn banknotes
not even recognised by any state. The rise of the local "Swiss dinar" as
it is known, has been driven by a shortage of notes and a perception
that it will become Iraq's new currency after a U.S.-led war. Warnings
by experts that it may simply be scrapped have fallen on deaf ears.
