Long COVID sufferer Pedro Sanchez-Vicente, a 56-year-old event organiser, poses for a photograph taken through blue plastic, in Madrid, Spain, March 17, 2021. The photograph was taken through blue plastic to visualise the effects of long COVID. Sanchez-Vicente spent 100 days intubated in an ICU unit after getting infected with COVID in March, 2020. But after his release from the hospital he started developing many of the symptoms associated with long COVID. "I'm not your typical long COVID case, because most of those patients haven't been hospitalised or not for too long, unlike me. But I share with them the mental mist, the paresthesia, the hearing problems, conjunctivitis, eye herpes. You could say I'm a hybrid," he said. When Sanchez-Vicente got transferred to a regular ward at the hospital, he spent most of his time in the armchair in his room, he was so weak he could barely stand up and laying down in bed for long periods of time was difficult. "When I returned home I saw the armchair my family had bought for me as a surprise. I have pretty much been living in that armchair for the past year. Even now I find myself sleeping in it for hours every night because I have difficulty breathing in bed." REUTERS/Susana Vera SEARCH "SPAIN LONGCOVID" FOR THIS STORY. A Picture and its Story: Protests, rallies and two impeachments: Trump's presidency in photographs
U.S. President Donald Trump welcomes 11-years-old Frank Giaccio as he cuts the Rose Garden grass at the White House in Washington, U.S., September 15, 2017. Carlos Barria: "Once in a while I have the chance to witness a natural, unscripted moment. During a typical morning in September, I got the announcement that the White House Pool would gather by the door of the Rose Garden for a photo opportunity. As it happened, President Donald Trump was planning to surprise 11-year-old Frank Giaccio - a youngster who wrote a letter to Trump offering to mow the White House lawn. Giaccio had then been invited to work for a day at the White House alongside National Park Service staff. As we waited for Trump to show up I saw that Giaccio was very focused on this job trying to cut the grass in straight lines, and not paying much attention to the group of journalists, photographers and cameramen milling around the garden. Suddenly, from the other side of a hedge, wearing his signature long, red tie, President Trump made his appearance. As Trump approached, he began shouting to the boy above the noise of the lawnmower, but it was too loud and Giaccio was so focused on his job that he never noticed Trump. He walked right past, pushing the machine. Trump paused for a second and walked to the end of the lawn to talk to Giaccio, but again, the boy didn't stop mowing the grass. He kept going until his father rushed onto the scene to grab his attention, and then he finally stopped to greet Trump." REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo SEARCH "PHOTOGRAPHERS TRUMP" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Scarred by 2020, Gen Z looks to a COVID-free future
Xiong Feng, 22, a dancer, poses for a photograph on a street in Wuhan, Hubei province, China, December 14, 2020. Xiong teaches Wuhan's only class in Voguing, a highly stylized dance form popularised in U.S. gay and transgender communities in the late 1980s. Wuhan's surprise 76-day lockdown, which cut the city off from the rest of China overnight on Jan. 23, began long before other countries began to feel the pain of the pandemic. Xiong, like many other Gen Z people in Wuhan, saw his life, education and business thrown into turmoil. The pandemic meant he was unable to graduate alongside his classmates, and lockdown meant he lost the opportunity to form tight friendships at a formative time in his life. "I think I've lost some friends. The relationship faded away because we didn't get in touch with each other during the epidemic," he said. Looking forward, Xiong hopes he can still be a trailblazer in the city's growing LGBT dance scene in 2021. His Voguing class has attracted more students since the lockdown was lifted, as people emphasise lifestyle and leisure. "I hope I can establish the first (ballroom event for Vogue dancing) in Wuhan in my spare time. Because I see cities in China like Shanghai and Chengdu have developed a very good ballroom culture, and I believe Wuhan can do it too." REUTERS/Aly Song SEARCH "GEN-Z COVID-19" FOR THIS STORY.
