Darmi, 48, and her brother Rusli, 43, stand outside her destroyed house hit by an earthquake as they look for clothes and other belongings in the rubble, in Balaroa neighbourhood, Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, October 10, 2018. The two-storey building collapsed. Darmi was in her kitchen cooking, with her older sister, her sister's two children, and three grandchildren in the house when the earthquake struck. They ran out of the house and headed for the hills as the ground started to give way beneath them. All of them are safe. "We were lucky because the soil pushed our house upwards. There were some houses here that just collapsed into the ground... It felt like the earth was alive. It was opening up, swallowing people, and then closing again. And the noise was so loud. This loud cracking 'k-k-k-k' sound," said Darmi. REUTERS/Jorge Silva SEARCH "QUAKE SURVIVORS" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

Professor Yakup Kaska puts a sea turtle back into her open-sea cage after a medical check at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center (DEKAMER) off the shore of Iztuzu Beach near Dalyan in Mugla province, Turkey, August 25, 2018. Kaska, group president of the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, who first volunteered at Iztuzu in the early days of the conservation project, says the main threats the turtles face are getting struck by boat propellers, swallowing or getting tangled in fishing lines, and eating clear plastic items which they mistake for jellyfish. The Wider Image: Sinking shoreline threatens millions in Indonesia
Experts say scores of villages and towns along Indonesia's shoreline are being inundated because of a grim combination of man-made environmental destruction and climate change. Roughly 40 percent of Jakarta is below sea level and a new sea wall has had to be built in a bid to hold back the waves. Indonesia, an archipelago of thousands of islands, has about 81,000 km (50,331 miles) of coastline, making it particularly vulnerable to climate change. It is also home to more than a fifth of the world's mangrove forests, which naturally help keep the tides out. But only 3 million hectares of mangroves remain, down from nearly double that three decades ago, according to Wetlands International. For years, coastal communities have chopped down the mangrove forests to clear the way for fish and shrimp farms, and for rice paddies. In some places, hundreds of metres of coast that used to be lined with mangroves have now been swallowed up by the sea. The government has scrambled to work with environmental groups to replant mangroves, build dykes and relocate some people. But many residents, mostly poor fishermen and vendors, are either reluctant to leave their old family homes or simply have nowhere to go further inland on crowded Java.
