A group of retired people take part in a Tai Chi class session in Nice
A group of retired people take part in a Tai Chi class session in Nice February 19, 2013. France's President will ask more of old people to fix the hole in the nations retirement coffers but tread gently in doing so. Even a softly-softly approach will mark the first time a left-wing president has dared to tamper with a system which is one of the sacred cows of France's model of generous welfare provision. A plan in the works will likely leave intact the official retirement age of 62 but trim annual pension rises, buying Hollande time to try and coax people in their 50s and 60s to work a few more years, officials working on the project say. Elderly people practice "Tai Chi Chuan", a Chinese form of martial arts, as part of an assistance program for older adults organized by the Gerontological Association Costarricense in San Jose September 27, 2011. According to the National Council for the Elderly (Conapan), adults aged 60 and up comprise 9.5 percent of the total population of almost 5 million inhabitants and it is estimated that in the next five years the adult population will grow by 15 percent. The authorities indicate that the Costa Rican population faces an aging problem because of the process of demographic and socioeconomic shifts as well as rapid development of science and technology. According to the U.N., the world population will reach seven billion this year, making the population almost quarter what it was in 1960. Picture taken September 27, 2011.
