Fishing nets and buoys lie on a boat belonging to Apriadi Anwar, 45, a local fisherman in Batu Perahu village in Toboali, on the southern shores of the island of Bangka, Indonesia, May 2, 2021. Apriadi said in the past his family earned enough to pay for his two younger siblings to go to university, but in recent years, they have barely scraped by. "Never mind going to university, these days it's difficult to even buy food," he said. Apriadi says fishing nets can get tangled up in offshore mining equipment, while trawling the seabed to find seams of ore has polluted once-pristine waters. "Fish are becoming scarce because the coral where they spawn is now covered with mud from the mining," he added. REUTERS/Willy Kurniawan SEARCH "KURNIAWAN TIN" FOR THIS STORY. Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
A Picture and its Story: The despair of a Rio widow, in a city struggling with violence
For Ricardo Moraes, a veteran photographer who for 11 years has documented for Reuters life in Rio de Janeiro's often dangerous cinderblock slums known as "favelas", work began at about 6 a.m. on Thursday, when he heard a radio report of a hostage situation in Sao Carlos, a sprawling tangle of hillside homes near the city center. The images he would capture - a young woman, kneeling over her husband's body, overcome with grief and surrounded by heavily armed police - ultimately would appear on the front pages of Brazil's two largest newspapers. They resonated in a city fed up with violence, where residents say shootouts among aggressive criminal gangs and a notoriously deadly police force are common. The incident culminating in the photographs began when a man who police later identified as a drug trafficker took a family of three hostage in an apartment building. He surrendered but hours later police exchanged gunfire with other suspects near the lobby, and the fighting quickly spilled into the surrounding area. Then another family was taken hostage in a house nearby, by another heavily armed group. As negotiations with police ensued, female relatives of the drug gang gathered nearby. Hours later, the hostage-takers surrendered and exited the second building. But one of them was missing. Behind the police, the women edged closer to the home. Sprawled on a staircase was a dead body. That is when the subject of Moraes' photograph broke into tears. Surrounded by police dressed in military-style gear, the images show the young woman collapsing in despair as she recognizes the body. Another woman comforts her. When Moraes visited the local morgue on Friday morning, he saw the woman again, distraught and surrounded by family. She agreed to talk. In a brief interview, the woman, who identified herself only as Juliana, said she was the wife of the slain man, who she named as Davi Barboza. She said she was four months pregnant with his child. She acknowledged he was a crimi

Pictures of the Year: A picture and its story
Supporters of the National Socialist Movement, a white nationalist political group, give Nazi salutes while taking part in a swastika burning at an undisclosed location in Georgia, U.S. on April 21, 2018. Reuters photographer Go Nakamura: "I never fathomed capturing this image. Earlier in the day, I had been covering a very uneventful white supremacy rally in Newnan, Georgia, run by a neo-Nazi group called National Socialist Movement, the same group involved in the infamous Charlottesville rally in 2017. A couple of colleagues told me that the group might hold some sort of secret ritual outside of town afterwards. Together, we approached the head of the movement who granted us permission to document the ritual. After waiting for several hours, we reached the backyard of a bar in the middle of nowhere where we saw a big wooden swastika and cross set up on the ground. Then, a group of some 15 neo-Nazis lit up their torches as they encircled the swastika and performed a Nazi salute. It was surreal. Adrenalin was rushing through my body, but I remained focused on capturing what was unfolding in front of my eyes. The ritual reached its climax when the group lined up in front of the burning swastika and began chanting and performing a final salute. We left immediately after it ended. As we drove away, I set about unravelling the tangle of emotions I experienced that day that led to this photo." REUTERS/Go Nakamura SEARCH "POY STORY" FOR THIS STORY. Professor Yakup Kaska puts a sea turtle back into her open-sea cage after a medical check at the Sea Turtle Rescue Center (DEKAMER) off the shore of Iztuzu Beach near Dalyan in Mugla province, Turkey, August 25, 2018. Kaska, group president of the Sea Turtle Rescue Center, who first volunteered at Iztuzu in the early days of the conservation project, says the main threats the turtles face are getting struck by boat propellers, swallowing or getting tangled in fishing lines, and eating clear plastic items which they mistake for jellyfish. The Wider Image: As Arctic warms, herders tangle with new industries
When he's not out on the Arctic tundra with his 2,000 reindeer, his dog and Whitney Houston blasting through his headphones, Nils Mathis Sara is often busy explaining to people how a planned copper mine threatens his livelihood. Along with other Sami herders and fishermen, the 60-year-old is in a standoff with the mine owners, Norwegian officials and many townspeople that is, after six years, coming to a head. It is a litmus test for the Arctic, where climate change and technology are enabling mineral and energy extraction, shipping and tourism while threatening traditional ways of life and creating tensions among its four million inhabitants. The Wider Image: Manila's slums an endless battle for firefighters
One scorching afternoon this month, inhabitants of a slum in the Philippine capital frantically hurled buckets of water to try to save their homes from a raging fire. Six hours later, their efforts proved to no avail. There have been over 2,200 fires in Manila this year and the majority of these have occurred in slum areas, data from the Bureau of Fire Protection showed. In a country with a yawning wealth gap, the hardest hit are the hundreds of thousands of urban poor who call the shanties home. For the capital's thousands of firefighters, the slums are sprawling, unregulated tinderboxes. Tangles of drooping wires run from one electric post to another along the narrow alleys of the city's most neglected communities, crowded with shacks made from plywood and coconut tree lumber. Fire safety and building codes are unheard of. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the so-called informal settlers complicate efforts to save property and lives.
