Venezuelan migrant Elizabeth Rondon, 28, poses for a picture with her children Luis, 5, Samantha, 2 and Samuel, four months old, while they wait to process their documents at the Ecuadorian-Peruvian border service centre, before they continue their journey to Trujillo, on the outskirts of Tumbes, Peru, June 17, 2019. Rondon, from Maracaibo, one of the hottest areas of Venezuela, said: "There is no life there, you wake up, and you do not have electricity. My son can't go to classes because there is no electricity, and the school doesn't have the right conditions; they don't have water in the bathrooms or for them to drink". "I decided to start teaching him at home in March." With tears running down her face, she said, "One of the toughest things (in Venezuela), was not being able to sleep. As a parent, you are so tired from all you do during the day. To take care of the children, wash their clothes, find food, and have to deal with a power cut at night knowing that it will last at least 12 hours. That's ugly. But it wasn't only one a day. It has been like that in March, April, May, and June until I left, almost every day it was the same." "I want my children to have an education like the one I had." "Most of the people there (in Venezuela) don't even dream of going to university. Mainly because you can't afford it and secondly, the quality is not the same as before." "I want my children to dream in big; I would like them to want to be doctors, engineers, or architects." "I would like to go back to Venezuela, but I would like to see it as I remember it." Pictures of the Year: A picture and its story
A police officer pepper sprays a protester as another protester stands in front of the race director's car at the 218-km Stage 16 from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon of the Tour de France, July 24, 2018. Reuters photographer Stephane Mahe: "The Tour de France was in its final days. I was aboard a motorbike following a long 218-kilometre stage from Carcassonne in the deep southwest of France up to the Pyrenees. In the early part of the stage I got a little frustrated, unable to find a 'postcard' image or vantage point to shoot the race. After 25 kilometres, the motorbikes were told to gather three kilometres further along. Something was happening at last! I could see a flock of sheep with farmers and police. I jumped down and started to imagine a photo with sheep and the Tour peleton. As I got closer I quickly felt the tension: farmers were there with their livestock and tractors to demonstrate, not to watch the riders. I realised they intended to block the race. The Tour security asked me to leave but I decided to stay as something more than a sporting episode was unfolding. Just before the arrival of the peleton, I saw two young women rush onto the road, shouting and blocking an official Tour car as farmers cheered them on. The gendarmes immediately sprayed tear gas at the two protesters, who screamed and struggled. I took my picture. The two women were quickly removed from the road and the peleton arrived. The cyclists slowed and then stopped, troubled by the tear gas in the air. They struggled to breathe, wiped their eyes. One even asked me if someone had thrown acid in his face. It was chaos. The race was held up for 17 minutes - very unusual. I thought of the two protesters, I knew it was a striking image. That evening, after this stage of Tour was over, I discovered that the photo had gone viral. The protesters had an audience for their fight against the loss of local farming subsidies. But the Tour went on." REUTERS/Stephane Mahe SEARCH "POY STORY" FOR T

Brussels, Belgium
A Picture and its Story: Anger, sore eyes and a photograph on the streets of Brussels
Reuters photographer Yves Herman: "Usually, a golden rule for a news photographer covering a scene of angry confrontation is to get close, but not involved. Sometimes, though, it's hard to avoid. "Yellow vest" protests have in recent days spread to Belgium from France. I followed hundreds of people marching through Brussels on Saturday to demand lower fuel prices and better living conditions. They were blocked from reaching the government quarter by riot police using water cannon and tear gas. Some of the crowd hurled rocks and firecrackers at them. Police squads started surrounding protesters, sending in snatch teams to arrest individuals. As the march was organised on social media without approval from the authorities, police took the view that anyone involved could be detained and taken away. Most are quickly released without charge. When one young man was seized, a young woman with him rushed towards the line of police, shouting that he had done nothing wrong. She had no mask or helmet and nothing in her hands. She wasn't even wearing one of the fluorescent yellow vests adopted by the movement. As she yelled at a policewoman, another officer standing behind the front rank pointed and fired a pepper-spray gun, dousing the young woman in the face. The photo I took dramatically captured the white liquid's moment of impact and her anguished expression. She turned away crying and sat down on the road, her eyes and face inflamed. I had a bottle of eyewash as part of my own safety equipment. I put my camera down, asked her to look up and carefully dropped the soothing liquid into her eyes." The Wider Image: Violence leaves lasting marks among Rio victims' families
On the morning of April 8, 12-year-old Eduarda Lopes watched as her mother, Valdilene da Silva, was shot by a stray bullet in Rio de Janeiro's Manguinhos slum, one of the countless innocent victims of rising gangland violence in the city. As she lay dying in a puddle of blood, Silva used her last breaths to tell her daughter to run and hide. But despite her fear of being killed, Lopes stayed with her mother. "I waited with her until the final moment, by her side," Lopes told Reuters, as tears streamed down her face. "I couldn't bear it," Lopes said, of when she got to see her mother's corpse later that day. "I saw her lying there and she looked like a doll, asleep. The only thing I could take with me were the earrings she was wearing." Brazil's violence is spiking and ever more victims are caught in the crossfire of gangs warring with each other or police. Rio de Janeiro state registered over 4,500 murders during the first eight months of 2018, up 6 percent compared with the same period in 2017. More than 1,000 people died in confrontations with police in the state between January and August, official data shows, up over 50 percent on the same period in 2017. Authorities say those killed are mostly suspected drug gang members, while critics allege innocent people are also slain. Pictures of the Year: Venezuela crisis
An injured opposition supporter is helped by volunteer members of a primary care response team during clashes with riot security forces at a rally against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government in Caracas, Venezuela, June 22, 2017. Ivan Alvarado: "This image was taken next to an airforce base where another protestor was fatally injured that day. I don't know how this man was injured, I first saw him as the first aid volunteers carried him out from the midst of the tear gas. You can really see the pain in his expression as he cries out. After I took the image the motorbike speeded off down the highway." REUTERS/Ivan Alvarado/File Photo SEARCH "POY VENEZUELA" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "REUTERS POY" FOR ALL BEST OF 2017 PACKAGES.
