Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
Anti-LGBT protesters attack a participant of the KharkivPride march in support of the LGBT community in Kharkiv, Ukraine, September 15, 2019. Reuters Photographer Gleb Garanich: "As a gay pride march in Kharkiv, north eastern Ukraine, was winding down, I noticed a gang that was clearly hostile to the LGBT community. Then I heard some screams, saw a commotion and ran over. A skinny teenage boy with a streak of dyed blonde hair was lying on the grass in the park, being brutally attacked by members of the far-right, anti-LGBT gang. Three or four men, some with their faces covered, were kicking him as he was huddled on the ground. The crowd was jeering. I captured what was happening on camera as I ran over and then decided to step in. The teenager's life was in danger. I got in between him and the assailants, helped him up off the ground and led him away from the crowd. I said a few words to the attackers, and they stepped back. Later his mother sent me a message, saying they could have kicked him to death. After I walked him out of there, I got back to work. The far-right group moved on to look for their next victim. And I followed them, to document it." REUTERS/Gleb Garanich/File Photo SEARCH "POY STORIES 2019" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

The Wider Image: Forced to beg, Senegal's "talibes" face exploitation and abuse
An eight-year-old boy fled his Koranic school in Saint-Louis, Senegal this month after he said a teacher threatened to beat him for not earning enough money begging on the street. Hours later, alone in the corner of a low-lit bus station, he was raped by a teenager. The child, whose name is not disclosed for privacy reasons, was rescued mid-assault by a local non-profit called Maison de la Gare that patrols Saint-Louis at night battling what has become a deep-rooted problem in Senegalese cities: thousands of young boys sent to religious schools end up begging on the streets, or worse. A Reuters witness also saw the rape before it was stopped. Families across Senegal have long enrolled their children in schools called daaras to learn Islamic scripture and build character. Historically, part of that teaching included begging for food to instill humility. REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra SEARCH "TALIBE BENSEMRA" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. The Wider Image: A rare look inside the "heart of society" for Iraq's Shi'ites
For more than 1,000 years, the al-Hawza al-Ilmiyya south of Baghdad has been one of the hearts of Shi'ite Islamic scholarship, training the clerics who lead Shi'ite communities across the Muslim world. Thousands of students, from teenage boys to university graduates, study Islam at its schools in the holy cities of Najaf and Kerbala. Shi'ites, who are the majority in Iraq, were repressed under dictator Saddam Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, but now lead the Iraqi government since Saddam was overthrown in 2003. Clerics trained at the Hawza have wide social and political influence, both inside Iraq and abroad. This year, around 200 fully fledged clerics will graduate, completing a process that requires at least ten years of study. In the Najaf school, a typical day will see clerics in flowing black robes and white turbans giving lectures to groups of students sitting on the floor of a great hall, lined with pointed arches and elaborate mosaics. Students are given instruction in subjects including Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy, theology, logic and interpreting Islam's holy book, the Koran. The Wider Image: Life on Gloomy Street
Italy is taking in thousands of boat migrants every week for a third year in a row, and friction is common between them and those who live along the path many take on their journey towards northern Europe. Set up by volunteers, the Baobab centre, by Rome's Tiburtina train station, was shut down by police in December in the wake of the Paris attacks and because the European Union wants Italy to stop migrants from moving on, not help them to do so.Ê But Baobab volunteers quickly set up a camp on the street in front of the old shelter with tents and chemical toilets, serving three meals a day, and migrants have flocked there in their thousands. Baobab organisers estimate 40,000 have come through in the past year. Last week, about 300 men, women, children and teenage boys slept on mattresses laid out on the road, and the numbers are expected to rise as the summer wears on. Chilean priest Fernando Karadima (L) leaves the Supreme Court building in Santiago, Chile, November 11, 2015. Karadima went to the court for questioning in a lawsuit brought against the Catholic church over sexual abuses he is said to have committed against three victims. Karadima has denied accusations of abuse, but in 2011, a Vatican investigation found him guilty of abusing teenage boys over many years and ordered him to retire to "a life of prayer and penitence".
