The Wider Image: Journey to Antarctica: seals, penguins and glacial beauty
Greenpeace brought Reuters photo and television journalists along for a segment of the voyage, bringing them on the Arctic Sunrise from Chile through the rough waters of the Drake Passage, to the Antarctic Peninsula Ð which was brimming with wildlife. Photographer Alexandre Meneghini: "The trip began in Punta Arenas, the capital of Magallanes region, Chile. We had spent three days aboard the Arctic Sunrise, a Greenpeace ship docked in one of the city's harbours, to test our equipment and conduct security drills. I was eager to get to Antarctica. Greenpeace, the global environmental group, organised the journey to raise awareness of, and support for, a European Union proposal to create the biggest protected area on Earth in Antarctica. The plan was to create a safe haven for marine life there from industrial fishing. The strategy involved documenting the effects of climate change, pollution and fishing on native wildlife. Pictures and video footage, specimen samples from the Antarctic seafloor, and surface water sampling for microplastics were all collected by Greenpeace to help build the case for the sanctuary." Television crew members prepare to shoot a footage from an area where a Nazi train is believed to be, in Walbrzych, southwestern Poland August 30, 2015. Poland said on Friday it was almost certain it had located the Nazi train rumored to have gone missing near the close of World War Two loaded with guns and jewels. Polish authorities started looking for the train this month, tipped off by a German and a Pole who said through lawyers that they had found it in the southwestern district of Walbrzych and expected 10 percent of the value of the findings as a reward. U.S. President Barack Obama appears on a television screen in the assembly hall as he delivers remarks at the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia July 28, 2015. Obama told African nations on Tuesday they needed to respect democratic rules and create jobs to avoid a slide into disorder. In the first speech by a serving U.S. president to the 54-nation African Union, he said violence unleashed in Burundi by the president's bid for a third term in office showed the risks of ignoring constitutional rules. Demonstrators hold a minute of silence for the victims during a protest against the bomb attack in the border town of Suruc, in central Istanbul, Turkey, July 20, 2015. A suspected Islamic State suicide bomber killed at least 28 people, mostly young students, in an attack on a Turkish town near the Syrian border on Monday. Television footage showed bodies lying beneath trees outside a cultural centre in the mostly Kurdish town of Suruc in southeastern Turkey, some 10 km (6 miles) from the Syrian town of Kobani where Kurdish fighters have been battling Islamic State. The blast tore through a group of mostly university-aged students from an activist group as they gathered to make a statement to the local press about a trip they were planning to help rebuild Kobani. The Hurriyet daily said the attacker was an 18-year old woman, but there was no confirmation. REUTERS/Murad Sezer
