Rome abuse protection centre risks closure despite surge in domestic violence during coronavirus lockdown...
Egilda Orrico, an activist, sits in the window of 'Lucha y Siesta' (Fight and Rest) women's house, a building run solely by activists to look after women suffering from domestic violence in the city, in Rome, Italy, July 8, 2020. "This place changed my life. This house chose me, then I chose it" said the activist. 'Lucha y Siesta' has been a crucial lifeline for women suffering from domestic violence and abuse in the city for 12 years, helping and supporting over 1,200 women and around 400 children. The previously abandoned building was occupied and transformed by women's rights activists in 2008, who also use to the space to hold workshops and training for all ages on how to fight gender violence. It is now under threat and risk of closure as owners of the building, the city's heavily indebted public transport company ATAC, plan to sell it for around 2.6 million euros to claw back some much needed finances. During lockdown, 'Lucha y Siesta' had a 30 percent increase in requests for help, and had to come up with alternative ways to accommodate the emergency situation after local authorities threatened to cut electricity and water in the building in an effort to push the women out. Volunteers warn losing the beds available will restrict critical help for vulnerable women in the Italian capital. The entire city of Rome has only 39 beds available for women escaping violence and Lucha y Siesta makes up 14 of those. Three women arrived at Lucha during lockdown. Picture taken July 8, 2020. Meghan Sheehan, 27, a nurse practitioner who is caring for COVID-19 patients at an emergency department, poses for a photograph after a 12-hour shift, outside the hospital where she works, during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, Maryland, U.S., April 6, 2020. "I think the hardest moment has been the fear that lives within all of us. There is a lot of unknown right now. We fear what's going to happen tomorrow, how the emergency department will look next week when we come in. We have fears about our own colleagues, whether they will fall ill. We also fear that we could be asymptomatic carriers and bring this virus home to our families and our loved ones. There has been a lot of fear over our supplies and whether we'll run out. And then obviously there is the fear that we will see patients and not be able to do everything we normally can to help save patients' lives," Sheehan said. Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange arrives at the Westminster Magistrates Court, after he was arrested in London, Britain, April 11, 2019. Reuters Photographer Hannah McKay: "We had been waiting for Julian Assange to leave the Ecuadorian embassy for seven years. Every now and then there would be a rumour that he was leaving and we would scramble to Knightsbridge (the neighborhood where the embassy is located), but nothing. When the news broke that Assange had been taken into custody I was in Downing Street. I rushed to Westminster MagistratesÕ Court in case he was taken there. A Reuters colleague got an exclusive image of him leaving the police station, and let me know that Assange would be in the second van in the convoy. When the police vans arrived it was pandemonium. The photographers and TV crews surged forward as police tried to hold us back. One officer lunged towards me. I darted to the left and shot a few frames. To be honest, I was quite surprised that I got the shot. Shooting through tinted glass is a bit of a skill. You had to jam your lens as close to the window of the moving vehicle as possible and fire the flash to illuminate through the glass. I've been told that the picture is reminiscent of an oil painting. That's partly due to the colour of the tinted window, and partly because the image isnÕt entirely sharp!" Migrant from Honduras, Dunia Ayala, carries one of her children outside a shelter after she was sent by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to Mexico from the U.S. under the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), in Tijuana, Mexico, July 21, 2019. "I crossed to the U.S. with my family, we gave ourselves up to the border patrol, then they took us to a place where it was very cold, they took all our belongings, jackets, shoelaces, everything, then started to question us. We feel very intimidated by them. My husband said to them, 'We didn't have the fortune to be born in a country like yours, we just want a better future for our kids.' Anyway they forced us to sign a paper of the MPP. Now, we have an appointment, but after the way they treated us, we are going back to Honduras." The Wider Image: Venezuelan mothers, children in tow, rush to migrate
Venezuelan migrant Ailin Tua, 43, poses for a picture with her daughters Paola, 18, and Sofia, 13, as they wait for a taxi to continue their journey, after they processed their documents at the Ecuadorian-Peruvian border service centre, on the outskirts of Tumbes, Peru, June 17, 2019. Tua is a seamstress who had her own workshop, until lack of customers and the high price of raw materials forced her to close. She said that her husband was a truck driver and had a good income. "He killed himself for more than 28 years... on Venezuela's highways, thank God, who took care of him for such long time while working to support us and support his family," but when "the owner of the company where he worked migrated to the United States the business closed." In 2017 her husband left the country, first to Ecuador and then to Peru, but it was not until six months later that he managed to get a stable job and was able to send money back to Venezuela. These were tough months for her husband. "He slept on the street for almost four months," she said. The final trigger take the family out of Venezuela was a kidnap threat, "I received a call and they said: 'Ahilin, I want $350 right now or I'll go to kidnap Paola and Sofia, I will go to their schools.'" "I stopped a taxi, and I went to their schools to pick them up quickly, then we went home, and packed what we could carry in two black trash bags... and ran to my sisters' house." Tua left her daughters living with her sister in another town and migrated to try and establish a new home, before going back to Venezuela to collect her daughters. The window of one of the rooms of the Padre Trinitarios school where philosophy teacher Teresa Conde, 52, says she was raped by a priest 30 years her senior when she was 14, is seen in Salamanca, Spain, February 7, 2019. "The rapist went unpunished then and those who covered up go unpunished now," says Conde, who opened up to her family about the rapes when she was 42 after a lifetime of psychological trauma. She says she only started really living when the priest died three years ago. Father Daniel Garcia, a leading clergyman at the time in the area where Conde went to school, corroborated her story to Reuters based on a conversation he had with the priest 10 years ago.
