Ciudad Juarez, Mexico
Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
Guatemalan migrant Ledy Perez embraces her son Anthony while praying to ask a member of the Mexican National Guard to let them cross into the United States, as seen from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, July 22, 2019. Reuters Photographer Jose Luis Gonzalez: "Ledy Perez fell to her haunches, a clenched hand covering her face as she wept, an arm clutching her small 6-year old son, who glared defiantly at the Mexican National Guard soldier blocking them from crossing the Rio Grande into the United States. I captured the plight of this mother and son who had travelled 1,500 miles from Guatemala to the border city of Ciudad Juarez, only to be stopped mere feet from the United States. The woman begged and pleaded with the National Guard to let them cross to a better future for Anthony Diaz. The soldier, dressed in desert fatigues, an assault rifle slung over his shoulder, only said he was following orders. Her face was a small reflection of all migrants' suffering. One of several images Reuters published, this photo was picked up widely on social media. It has thrown into the spotlight the role Mexico's militarized National Guard police force is playing in containing migration. The soldier displayed no overt aggression during the nine-minute encounter with Perez and her son. Still, the power dynamics apparent in the image resonated with criticism of the treatment migrants are receiving. Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who retweeted my picture after it was posted by a former Mexican ambassador to the United States wrote 'what a pity, Mexico should never have accepted this,'. Seizing the opportunity when the soldier glanced away, Perez lunged into the shrubs growing on the side of the river bank, pulling her son with her. They quickly ran across to the other side of the river and out of the guardsmen's jurisdiction where U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents took them into custody." Honduran migrants hike in the forest after crossing the Lempa river, in the border line between Honduras...
Agua Caliente, Guatemala
A Picture and its Story: Central American migrants trek north to seek a better life
Honduran migrants hike in the forest after crossing the Lempa river, in the border line between Honduras and Guatemala to join a caravan trying to reach the U.S, in Guatemala, October 17, 2018. Jorge Cabrera: "A Honduran family with the father in front, a mother with child, and an aunt, carrying all their belongings, scramble up a hill in the jungle after crossing the Lempa river from Honduras into Guatemala. The family, part of a group of some 150 migrants fleeing violence and poverty back home, decided to wade across the river after seeing that Honduran authorities had formed a human wall, blocking the border crossing. For me this image underscores the fact that you can get as far as your feet will take you. I traveled with the caravan of migrants for nine days. When there was downtime they played cards. If there was a soccer ball, they kicked it around. They took turns to bathe at the shelters. Sometimes there wasn't enough food to go around for everyone. But some kind-hearted soul would come through and donate cheese tortillas, instant soups or some other meal. When they were on the move, they always walked in groups. A few short kilometers after crossing the river and climbing the hill, their journey was abruptly cut short by Guatemalan authorities. One by one, men, women and children were boarded onto buses and trucks and sent back to Honduras. After they were deported, I never heard from the family again. This experience showed me that the idea of fighting for the chance at a better life, the desire for well-being cannot be stamped out no matter what walls are thrown up. Their journey goes on and on." A Picture and its Story: "Day of Rage" - a knife, a fake bomb belt, a death
I went to the road just outside Ramallah, as on previous days, because that is one of the places in the West Bank where Palestinians have been protesting against U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The 100-metre stretch leads from the city limits of Ramallah to the Jewish settlement of Beit El, and has a filling station and a traffic circle. Earlier on Friday, which Palestinians were calling a "Day of Rage", I had tried the Kalandia crossing point into the West Bank, but the Israelis had thrown tear gas and I knew this would make taking good photographs difficult. Outside Beit El, a group of paramilitary Israeli police had driven back hundreds of Palestinians who were throwing rocks and burning tyres. I was photographing the protesters, and did not see another Palestinian who apparently emerged close to the Israeli squad from a hiding place near the traffic circle. I heard the Israeli police shooting, and turned around. On instinct, I started taking pictures, all the time trying to keep well out of the line of fire. When the Palestinian fell, I could see that he was holding a knife, and wearing what looked like a suicide bomb vest. Israeli police said he had managed to stab and wound one of their number before being shot. Palestinian medics later said the attacker was dead, and that his bomb belt had been fake.
