The Wider Image: A U.S. tribe's uphill battle against climate change
The Quinault's struggles reflect the broader challenges of Native Americans, who are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change because their tribes are tied to reservation land and rely on natural resources for subsistence and trade, according to the National Climate Assessment report written by federal agencies. Southwestern tribes such as the Navajo Nation face acute water shortages as the Colorado River dries up. Northern tribes including the Bar River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa are losing access to wild rice and walleye due to warming in Lake Superior, which has heated faster than any other U.S. body of water. Pictures of the Year: A Picture and its Story
Guajajara Indians "forest guardians" detain a logger during a search for illegal loggers on Arariboia indigenous land near the city of Amarante, Maranhao state, Brazil, September 17, 2019. Reuters Photographer Ueslei Marcelino: "The photo shows the actions of the indigenous Guajajaras against illegal logging in the Amazon Rainforest. I followed these ÒGuardians of the ForestÓ for seven days on their mission to expel invaders. We walked many miles with no potable water, food, tents or adequate weapons. Spiritually the Guajajaras believe they are defending their land as predestined by their ancestors. "I go to sleep, and I can never forget my grandfather before he died saying that one day, I would defend our land with my own life," one man known as Wolf, said. This logger was tied up and interrogated. After attempting to remove the trucks loaded with the logs they were burned. Then the man was released and the Guajajaras returned to their villages. Some celebrated the fact that logging was paralysed for a few days at least. This was not an easy assignment. The loggers fired at the indigenous people. Physically the pace of the Guajajaras can be compared to high-performance athletes Ð the distance was immense, and they faced jungle heat and dehydration. For me, it was seven days of expectation, for a few minutes of confrontation in the darkness of the forest." REUTERS/Ueslei Marcelino/File Photo SEARCH "POY STORIES 2019" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: K-Pop stardom lures Japanese youth to Korea despite diplomatic chill
Yuuka Hasumi put high school in Japan on hold and flew to South Korea to try her chances at becoming a K-pop star, even if that means long hours of vocal and dance training, no privacy, no boyfriend, and even no phone. Hasumi, 17, joined Acopia School in Seoul, a prep school offering young Japanese a shot at K-pop stardom, teaching them the dance moves, the songs and also the language. She is one of an estimated one million other K-pop star wannabes, from South Korea and abroad, hoping to get a shot at super competitive auditions by major talent agencies that will take on just a select few as "trainees". Hasumi is one of 500 or so young Japanese who join Acopia each year, paying up to $3,000 a month for training and board. The school also fixes auditions for its candidates with talent management companies that have been the driving force behind the "Korean-wave" pop culture that exploded onto the world stage in the past decade with acts such as global chart topping boy band BTS. The influx of Japanese talent that is reshaping the K-pop industry comes at a time of increasingly bitter political acrimony between the two countries that has damaged diplomatic ties. While Uighurs had no problems in Turkey until three or four years ago, Ankara's security concerns and stronger ties with Beijing reversed that trend, said Tumturk. Perceptions of Uighurs suffered after some went to fight with jihadists against President Bashar al-Assad's forces, because of the Syrian government's close ties with Beijing, Tumturk said, adding China has ramped up pressure since then. FILE PHOTO: Hassan Mekki, a 32-year-old Sudanese migrant, shows scars on his back in Athens, Greece, December 5, 2012. Mekki, who fled conflict in his country in hope of a better life in Europe, said that on August 2012, about five months after he illegally entered Greece, he and a friend from Mauritania were walking in Athens when black-shirted men on motorcycles holding Greek flags came up and knocked him half-conscious with a blow to the head. When he regained consciousness, he was covered in blood. Only later would he realise that his attackers, which he says were likely tied to the far-right Golden Dawn party, had left large gashes resembling an "X" across his back. "I don't have the right papers, so I can't go anywhere to ask for help," Mekki said. "I can't sleep. I'm scared, maybe they will follow me and my life is in danger now." Pictures of the Year: A picture and its story
Croatia players celebrate next to an AFP photographer Yuri Cortez after Mario Mandzukic scores their second goal against England during the World Cup at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia, July 11, 2018. Reuters photographer Carl Recine: "It was the 2018 World Cup semi-final - England and Croatia were facing off. I had secured a pretty good seat throughout the tournament and things had gone pretty well for me, with plenty of goals and celebrations coming my way. The teams were tied 1-1 in the second half of extra time, and the next goal would take whoever scored to the final. Croatia went on the offence and soon enough Mario Mandzukic scored the crucial goal. I had that photo in the bag and now Mandzukic was running right towards me. Suddenly he was right in front of me, filling the frame of my 70-200mm lens. I always try to keep a wider 16-35mm lens close by for moments like this, though they rarely happen. In fact, I had never found myself in a similar situation before. As his teammates stormed towards him to celebrate, I jumped off my seat to avoid being swept up by the whole Croatian team. But another photographer who was sitting next to me was accidentally knocked to the floor. I kept photographing the celebrations, which now engulfed my colleague. This made the photograph even more unusual. The Croatian players then picked the photographer up, made sure he was okay, found his glasses on the floor and placed them back on his head. It was a special and unique moment, and I was delighted to be part of it." REUTERS/Carl Recine SEARCH "POY STORY" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "REUTERS POY" FOR ALL BEST OF 2018 PACKAGES. The Wider Image: Mongolia's reindeer herders fear lost identity
Smoke rises from the chimney of the family tent of Dukha herder Erdenebat Chuluu in a forest near the village of Tsagaannuur, Khovsgol aimag, Mongolia, April 21, 2018. "We wake up and have breakfast then release the reindeer. We herd them and at twelve o'clock we make them come back. Then while they are tied up, I chop some wood and do some other chores. I then relax for an hour or so. Later I release the reindeer again and around seven or eight o'clock I bring them back and tie them up again. By then, the woman of the family would have prepared some food, so this is how we spend our day," Chuluu said. REUTERS/Thomas Peter SEARCH "REINDEER HERDERS" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Escape from North Korea
Song Byeok, 48, poses for a photograph in Seoul, South Korea, September 27, 2017. Byeok was a propaganda artist. His father drowned trying to cross the Tumen river, in 2000. When the artist finally left North Korea in 2001, he brought photos of his family with him. "We left that August to find food," Byeok recalled, describing the first attempt. "We were from a town further inland, and we weren't sure where the river was high and where it was low. I didn't know at the time but the river was swollen because of the rainy season. I thought we had to cross it anyway. All I could think about was getting to China to buy food. I took off my clothes and tied them into a rope to strap us together. I told my father not to let go. As we approached the middle of the river, the strap felt lighter. I looked back and saw my father drifting away. I was devastated. He was going under the water and couldn't get out. I rushed up to the (North Korean) border guards and asked them to save him but they just said why did I come out, why didn't I die too. They handcuffed me and took me away. It was Aug. 28. I was tortured by the "bowibu" (North Korean secret police) in Hoeryong, then jailed for four months in Chongjin prison camp. But after I was released from the camp I felt like I needed to survive and carry on living. Right before I tried to defect again, I went back home and grabbed my family photos. Even if I died trying, I thought, at least I would have this picture with me. I never found my father. After I came to South Korea, I went back to China in 2004 and held a memorial service for him by the river. My heart still aches." REUTERS/Kim Hong-ji SEARCH "DEFECTORS" FOR THIS STORY.
