The Wider Image: Mongolia's reindeer herders fear lost identity
Erdenebat Chuluu, a nomadic herder, has lived all his life in the centuries-old tradition of his Dukha ancestors, renowned for their reindeer-herding and hunter-gathering skills in the forests of the rugged Sayan Mountains straddling the Russian border. But the Dukha fear they are losing their identity in the face of a conservation order by the government that bans unlicensed hunting on most of their traditional land. Reindeer outdo horses in this steep and snowy terrain and have allowed the Dukha to evade many of the upheavals that have historically afflicted people in the lowlands, from Genghis Khan to Communism. Chuluu's people, around 280 of them, are spread out across 59 households, about a day's ride from the village of Tsagaannuur. "It's our will to maintain the tradition of herding the reindeer in the same way as our ancestors did," Chuluu said. In 2012, Mongolia's government designated the majority of the Dukha's traditional herding grounds as part of a national park in an attempt to protect an ecosystem ravaged in the preceding couple of decades. A gory fight to the death between snarling dogs and captured wild boars. Gathered around a bamboo-walled arena, Indonesians in this remote part of Java island seem eager to watch the blood-curdling contests, known locally as 'adu bagong' (boar fighting). Not surprisingly, animal rights activist are up in arms against the regular spectacle, which began in the 1960s when wild pig numbers in this area in West Java soared and they were hunted to protect crops. Participants told Reuters the fights were a way to preserve a tradition of hunting in the area. There's also a cash prize for the winning dog. The fights take place in a 15-by-30 metre arena surrounded by a bamboo fence to protect spectators and only end when one of the animals is injured. If a boar survives a fight, once healed it will be returned to the arena to fight another day. If not, it will be butchered and sold for meat. Dog owners pay anywhere from 200,000 rupiah to 2 million rupiah ($15 to $150) to enter the fights, depending on the size of their dog. REUTERS/Beawiharta SEARCH "BOAR FIGHT" FOR THIS STORY.
