Roma child stands in the street at the Roma slum in Tiszavasvari
A Roma child stands in the street at the Roma slum in Tiszavasvari, east of Budapest September 26, 2014. Tiszavasvari, a town of 13,000, is by far the largest Jobbik-controlled municipality. Hungary's far-right Jobbik party is on track to take over dozens of city halls in a municipal election on October 12, 2014, handing it new powers that, critics say, it will use to persecute ethnic minorities. But the experience in Tiszavasvari is that even the most hardline agenda ends up running aground in the swamp of budget shortfalls, petty squabbles and failed schemes that make up local politics in Hungary. For the town's Roma, many of whom live in a slum of mud huts where half-naked children play in a trash-strewn ditch, the budget shortfall meant at least they did not have to add harassment by a far-right militia to their list of problems. Members of the Roma community are seen in front their shacks that have no running water or sewerage in Cierny Balog December 11, 2013. The people of this peaceful village at the foot of the Slovak mountains vented their anger by electing as their regional governor a man who calls his Roma compatriots "parasites" and admires a wartime figure who collaborated with the Nazis. Marian Kotleba's landslide victory in November exposed pent-up frustration over unemployment and neglect by mainstream parties, together with a deep-seated animosity towards the Roma, factors that have built support for extremist politicians in Slovakia and elsewhere in central Europe. Bulgarian police have identified a couple they suspect are the natural parents of a blonde girl found in a Roma camp in Greece, and prosecutors are investigating the woman for selling her child, officials said on Thursday. Last week's discovery of four-year-old Maria sparked a global search for her real parents after DNA tests showed the Roma couple she was with were not her blood relatives. Bulgarian Roma Sashka Ruseva (C), 38, holds her son Atanas, 2, as she speaks to media outside her house in the town of Nikolaevo, some 280km (173miles) east of Sofia October 24, 2013. Bulgarian police questioned Ruseva and her husband, Atanas Rusev, 36, on Thursday in the southern town of Nikolaevo. REUTERS/Stoyan Nenov (BULGARIA - Tags: CRIME LAW SOCIETY TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY)

Borcha Sonita (L), a 16-year-old Roma teenager, drags her suitcase as she leaves an illegal camp in Croix, northern France, before boarding a flight as part of a voluntary repatriation scheme to Romania Ocober 1, 2013. The European Union has threatened France with legal action over its handling of the expulsion of Roma migrants, with the EU's justice commissioner calling France's behaviour unacceptable and a disgrace. France's government spokeswoman this week defended official policy as a combination of "firmness and humanity" and said Roma returning to their country of origin was just one possible solution.
