Deforestation is seen in a village in Carhuaz in the Andean region of Ancash, November 28, 2014. Destruction of the Peruvian Amazon is rising after expanding over more than 145,000 hectares (560 square miles) last year - an 80 percent jump from the start of the century, the government said on Tuesday. A two-week long United Nations climate summit opened on December 1 in Lima, with experts and analysts from around the world gathering to discuss melting glaciers and extreme weather patterns. A Western Canadian pipeline once seen as the best near-term hope for sending more of the country's controversial tar sands crude to Asia has hit a sizable snag - angry municipal politicians intent on burying the project in lawsuits and red tape. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners' C$5.4 billion ($4.85 billion) Trans Mountain expansion would twin a 60-year-old line running from the oil-rich province of Alberta to the coastal city of Vancouver, tripling its capacity. The burned stumps of trees stand in a tract of deforested Amazon jungle near the city of Morais Almeida, Para state, June 26, 2013. The Amazon rainforest is being eaten away at by deforestation, much of which takes place as areas are burnt by large fires to clear land for agriculture. Initial data from Brazil's space agency suggests that destruction of the vast rainforest - the largest in the world - spiked by more than a third over the past year, wiping out an area more than twice the size of the city of Los Angeles. If the figures are borne out by follow-up data, they would confirm fears of scientists and environmental activists who warn that farming, mining and Amazon infrastructure projects, coupled with changes to Brazil's long-standing environmental policies, are reversing progress made against deforestation. Environmental issues will be under the spotlight as a United Nations Climate Change Conference opens in Warsaw, Poland on November 11. Picture taken on June 26, 2013. Tree trimming contractors work to cut down a large tree stump along Crenshaw Boulevard in Inglewood, California September 18, 2012. Clearing an unobstructed route for a retired spaceship, the space shuttle Endeavour, to take in its 12-mile (19-km) journey from Los Angeles International Airport to the California Science Center in October 2012 will require cutting down nearly 400 trees in all, and the temporary removal of hundreds of utility poles, street lights and traffic signals, officials say. But the science center, which is organizing the two-day move, promises to plant 1,000 new trees in place of those taken down. A tree stump sits in a clear cut by a timber company next to the village of Areias in Trairao, state of Para May 27, 2012. In the 19 months since Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff took office, longstanding rules that curtail deforestation and protect millions of square kilometers of watershed have been rolled back. She issued an executive order to shrink or repurpose seven protected woodlands, making way for hydroelectric dams and other infrastructure projects, and to legalize settlements by farmers and miners.
