Long COVID sufferer Maria Eugenia Diez, a 43-year-old ICU nurse, poses for a photograph taken through blue plastic, in Chiloeches, Spain, March 9, 2021. The photograph was taken through blue plastic to visualise the effects of long COVID. Year-long symptoms have made Diez give up exercise and forego medical congresses where she has trouble concentrating. "The first time I tried to take a swim in my pool, thinking that the water would help me improve my symptoms, it was very distressing. I started feeling out of breath the more I was submerging in the water. I had to sit on the steps and let the water surround me no higher than my waist to regain my breath," she said. Diez sometimes feels like a rookie at work despite her 20-year experience and has invented routines to remember tasks she used to perform automatically. She feels she has lost part of her identity, but she tries to stay positive. "I'm adapting to what I have, I will enjoy what I have now and I can't keep thinking about what I had before. It's hard because I miss it a lot." REUTERS/Susana Vera SEARCH "SPAIN LONGCOVID" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES

The Wider Image: The faces of India's coronavirus pandemic as deaths hit 100,000
Eight months after the novel coronavirus arrived in India, the number of deaths from the disease crossed 100,000 on Saturday. Nearly 6.5 million people have been infected in total, second only to the number in the United States. Reuters met and interviewed relatives of 30 people who died of the disease in India, from coastal Kerala on the country's southern tip to the Himalayan region of Kashmir in the north. The 30 victims were ordinary people from all walks of life, and included police officers and doctors on the frontlines of the fight against the virus. In what is still a conservative and developing country, some of the relatives said they faced ostracism after their loved ones caught the virus. Others said they have suffered from depression and money troubles. All said more could have been done to save the people who died. REUTERS/Amit Dave SEARCH "COVID DEATHS" FOR THIS STORY. ON THIS DAY -- March 20 March 20, 1999: BALLOONING - British balloonist Alan Noble, flight director of the Breitling Orbiter 3, cracked open a bottle of champagne at the balloon's flight control centre in Geneva, and compatriot Brian Jones and Swiss Bertrand Piccard became the first men ever to fly round the world non-stop in a hot air balloon. The pair crossed the 9 degree 27 minute west line of longitude over Mauretania exactly 20 days after taking off from Switzerland. The triumph marked an 18-year battle to achieve the feat for Noble, who took up ballooning in 1974. As flight director, Noble helped the balloonists avoid trouble spots and find air currents. Noble has played a part in many balloon record attempts, working on a number of altitude records. "I find it challenging and extremely exciting indeed," Noble told local media after one unsuccessful altitude attempt. "Contrary to popular belief, a balloon can be controlled to a big extent and doesn't just drift around in the sky." REUTERS/Denis Balibouse
