A young Pokot man is smeared with the contents of a bull's stomach by an elder during an initiation ceremony in Baringo County, Kenya, January 20, 2016. Far from the bustling city of Nairobi, in an isolated corner of Kenya's Rift Valley, young men from the Pokot community spear a bull in a ceremony called Sapana that takes them into adulthood. Following the ritual improves men's marriage prospects, provided they can amass a dowry of livestock for their bride. Initiates can also take part in local decision-making in a region where tradition remains strong and cattle play a central part in daily life. Kulick now spends about 16 hours a week doing tummy tucks and other surgical procedures, double what he did in 2008. Janet Yellen made her reputation as an early spotter of the looming slump seven years ago when she highlighted some unorthodox indicators of decline in consumer spending: tummy tucks, gourmet dining and country club memberships. Now she is Federal Reserve Chair, Yellen will find a much brighter picture from her novel monitoring system as she and the Fed board mull the first U.S. interest rate hike for nine years, which could come as early as September. Jiejin Qiu, who is six months pregnant with her first baby, poses underwater during a photo shoot at a local wedding photo studio in Shanghai September 5, 2014. Reuters Photographer Carlos Barria photographed a person born in each year China?s one child policy has been in existence; from a man born in 1979, to a baby born in 2014, and asked them if they would have like to have siblings. China, the world's most populous country with nearly 1.4 billion people, says the country's one-child policy has averted 400 million births since 1980, saving scarce food resources and helping to pull families out of poverty. Couples violating the policy have had to pay a fine, or in some cases have been forced to undergo abortions. But late last year, China said it would allow millions of families to have two children, part of a plan to raise fertility rates and ease the financial burden on a rapidly ageing population. Skin ulcers are seen on 69-year-old Gong Zhaoyuan's torso in Heshan village, in Shimen county, central China's Hunan Province, June 3, 2014. Zhaoyuan suffers from skin cancer, which developed as result of arsenic poisoning. From the 1950s, mines and chemical plants mushroomed in the area around Heshan which is rich in realgar, or arsenic disulphide. They were shut down in 2011 due to the pollution they caused but dust and runoff from arsenic plagues Heshan to this day. In 2010, 157 villagers from Heshan, with a population of about 1,500, had died of cancer caused by arsenic poisoning in the previous two decades, and another 190 had developed cancer due to arsenic poisoning, the villagers wrote in a letter to the local government, seen by Reuters, seeking compensation and aid. On the Internet he found "A Home Where Dreams Come True", a website touted as China's biggest online adoption forum, part of an industry that has been largely unregulated for years. Alberto Acosta tests his new prosthetic leg at the Center of Advanced Prosthetics in San Jose February 11, 2013. Dino Cozzarelli, an Ecuadorian orthotist and prosthetist living in Costa Rica, is attempting to introduce affordable prosthetic limbs for patients by purchasing prosthesis used previously in the U.S. and Europe and modifying them to fit their new wearers. For instance, a new bionic knee costs an average of $20,000 while a used one purchased and fitted with new sockets would cost patients only a quarter of its price. According to Cozzarelli, modifying plastic prosthesis is a better option for patients using free wooden prosthesis funded by the state's social security system, which are heavier and of lower quality than plastic ones. A boy evacuated from Sinlaj village is given a routine medical check by a doctor at the Mariscal Gregorio Solares military base in Huehuetenango, about 150 miles (240 km) northwest of Guatemala City September 29, 2012. The military evacuated 44 villagers on September 26 from Sinlaj village, located near the border with Mexico, after they were threatened by the Zetas drug cartel for not assisting in drug trafficking, according to Ronald Vasquez, the base's third commander who was in charge of the operation. The base is currently sheltering 29 villagers as it does not have the capacity to hold more people, with the other 15 being sheltered elsewhere, according to Vasquez. South Korean athletes looking to stay in peak shape for the London Olympics are turning to oriental rather than western medicine to see off aches and sprains that could derail their medal chances.
