Reuters photographer Zohra Bensemra: "On the plain of Arafat, I stood among hundreds of thousands of people who were all trying to reach the top of Mount Mercy, whilst covering my first haj after 20 years as a photographer for Reuters. Instead of praying in the traditional way, people were doing it in the "21st-century" way - using their mobile phones to read out prayers and take pictures at the mountain. There was one woman sporting a bright turquoise ring that caught my eye. Decades of haj tradition dictate the norm is to not wear jewellery. My first time walking around the holy city of Mecca, I was amazed by the mixture of people. There were Africans, Asians, Europeans, Americans, and Arabs, all coexisting in this tiny place. An Afghan artist poses for a photograph in Turquoise Mountain Institute in Kabul March 2, 2014. Despite decades of conflict in Afghanistan, and several recent militant attacks, the country's capital Kabul is home to a vibrant youth scene of musicians, artists, athletes and activists. Shopping malls and cafes stand in the city, which is nonetheless beset by infrastructure problems and instability. Afghanistan is preparing for an election on April 5 that should mark the first democratic transfer of power in the country's history, but it has been hit by a tide of violence as the Islamist Taliban movement has ordered its fighters to disrupt the vote and threatened to kill anyone who participates. A combination of file photos shows actress Lupita Nyong'o, star of the film "12 Years a Slave", wearing designer gowns in 2014. From left, Nyong'o is seen in red a Ralph Lauren gown for the Golden Globes, turquoise Gucci from the SAG awards and a jade Dior Haute Couture gown for the BAFTAs. Success on the red carpet can buy cachet that no advertising can - both for designers and stars - and profits for luxury brands for years to come. With stakes that high, the more established houses are raising their game and leaving little room for newcomers to make a splash, like they might have a decade ago. Grey seals play underwater by the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast, near Seahouses, northern England November 17 2013. The Farne Islands, which lie off the coast of northeast England, are home to a huge array of wildlife. The islands are owned and protected by the British conservation charity, the National Trust, which says they host some 23 species of seabird, as well as a substantial colony of grey seals, who come to have their pups there in the autumn. Every five years the National Trust carries out a census of the islands' population of puffins, and this year's survey showed there were almost 40,000 nesting pairs on the islands - an 8 percent rise from 2008. Sulphurous fumes engulf the one-kilometre-wide (0.62 miles) turquoise-coloured acid crater lake at Kawah Ijen, a volcanic crater in Indonesia's East Java province, May 26, 2010. The mining operation consists of channelling escaping volcanic gasses through networks of ceramic pipes from an active vent at the edge of the crater lake, resulting in the condensation of molten sulphur. The deep red molten sulphur pours slowly from the end of the pipes into pools on the ground, turning into yellow cakes of sulphur after it cools. It is then broken into large pieces to be carried by labourers to a collection centre at the foot of the volcano. REUTERS/Tim Chong (INDONESIA - Tags: ENVIRONMENT)
