The Wider Image: Nigeria's booming music scene
Each night as darkness descends on Lagos, Nigeria's commercial capital, sweat drenched young men and women descend on the megacity's numerous nightclubs to dance to the latest hit songs. Much like the famous "Nollywood" film industry, music is now big business in Africa's most populous nation. As in many Nigerian cities, music is inescapable in Lagos, whose 21 million inhabitants can hear popular songs in the form of mobile phone ringtones or blaring out of speakers on the private transit buses, known as danfos, that are ubiquitous. Artists who sing and rap over electronic backing tracks, in a genre known as Afrobeats, have seen their popularity in Nigeria spill over into record sales and sold-out concerts across Africa and in both Britain and the United States. A security guard tries to find the puncture in the inner-tube of his bicycle tyre by immersing it in the deserted and unmaintained former course for the kayaking competition of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, located on the outskirts of Beijing March 27, 2012. The gigantic infrastructures built for the Beijing Olympics, namely the "Bird's Nest", and the National Aquatics Centre, also known as the "Water Cube", are now used for cultural and sports events, reminding the world of the flare that blazed during the summer of 2008. However, some other Beijing Olympic venues, such as the rowing and kayaking centre, baseball arena and BMX track, have been left either deserted or been completely demolished. Whitmarsh, who is also the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) chairman, is enjoying a season where the main focus is the contest on the track rather than the fighting in the grand prix paddock. Whitmarsh said the recent debate over the 2011 tyre contract was an example of everyone pulling together and big teams helping the smaller ones in contrast to last year, which was marked by a controversy over split teams and the threat of a breakaway series.
