Composer and singer Luz plays his guitar during the Samba do Trabalhador in Rio de Janeiro
Composer and singer Moacyr Luz (R) plays his guitar during the Samba do Trabalhador or Working Man's Samba in reference to the workday at the Renascenca (Revival) club in Rio de Janeiro April 9, 2007. Thirteen musicians sacrifice their only weekly day of rest to jam every Monday from the afternoon into the night, reviving the traditional samba that Rio is famous for. Young and seasoned, white and black, the musicians - three guitar players, one mandolinist, two men playing "cavaquinho", or ukulele-like guitars, and the rest on percussion instruments - sit at a long table under a tree in the club's courtyard, playing, singing, laughing and sipping beer in between songs. Ryosuke Terata (R), expresses his loss March 6, 2001, as he is embraced by Jake Shimabukuro (L), who presented the families of the victims of the Ehime Maru with a ukulele song during a private ceremony in Honolulu, Hawaii. The submarine USS Greeneville collided with the fishing trawler February 9 off the coast of Oahu Hawaii; nine students and crew members died in the accident.
