A painting by German artists Alexej von Jawlensky (1864-1941) called Halbakt (Half-Nude) which was painted in 1912 (L) and an August Macke (1887-1914) called Zwei Frauen vor dem Hutladen (Two Women in front of a Hat Shop) (R) are shown at Sotheby's in London ahead of an auction in October 2002 of the Beck Collection of German expressionist and Modern Art, where they are expected to fetch GBP900,000-1.2 million (USD1.4 -1.8 million) and GBP1.5-2 million (USD 2.3-3.1 million) respectively, July 18, 2002. The painting by Jawlensky, described by Sotheby's director Helena Newman as one of the best in the collection, was at one stage in its life found in the studio of artist Josef Eberz blocking a hole in the ceiling. The Beck family, which ran a successful central heating business, supported many artists whose work was banned by the Nazi regime and labelled "degenerate".
