The Wider Image: Vanishing Dead Sea - a hermit haven
A naked man covered in mud lies on a beach, nearby a dreadlocked recluse reads from the Book of Exodus and a woman strikes a low soothing note from a Tibetan singing bowl. It's sunset at the Dead Sea, where the New Age melds with a biblical vista in danger of becoming a paradise lost. The Dead Sea's salt-rich waters are vanishing and its shores are being devoured by sinkholes, making Metzoke Dragot beach one of the last unspoiled spots at the lowest point on the planet. Over centuries the ancient lake has drawn monks, hermits, small Jewish sects and early Christians, travellers seeking spiritual elation and tourists who enjoy floating in the highly-buoyant water and covering themselves with its mineral-rich mud. But in the past few decades, ecological damage has been devastating. REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun SEARCH "ZVULUN DEADSEA" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY. The Wider Image: In the shadow of Bethlehem Steel
Railroad tracks run past the blast furnaces of the now-closed Bethlehem Steel mill in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, U.S. April 21, 2016. After Bethlehem Steel's blast furnaces went silent 20 years ago in the city of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the local economy bounced back as new industrial parks filled with e-commerce companies and white-collar businesses fleeing New York's higher costs. That adds to the challenge for Donald Trump, Republican nominee for the U.S. presidency, as he seeks voters' backing in the state's primary on April 26. Hikers walk on the south side of the Aletsch Glacier in Riederalp, Switzerland, August 23, 2015. One of Europe's biggest glaciers, the Great Aletsch coils 23 km (14 miles) through the Swiss Alps - and yet this mighty river of ice could almost vanish in the lifetimes of people born today because of climate change. The glacier, 900 metres (2,950 feet) thick at one point, has retreated about 3 km (1.9 miles) since 1870 and that pace is quickening.
