CGT union official Frederic Alpozzo (C) speaks to journalists after the vote of the end of their strike on board of the car ferry Danielle Casanova in Marseille July 10, 2014. A quick restructuring of SNCM is indispensable to secure the ferry operator's future, the head of shareholder Veolia said on Thursday as workers voted to end a strike blocking ports in Marseille and Corsica. Workers agreed to talks with a government-mandated mediator who has tabled a plan that would keep the long-struggling company afloat at least until the end of November, Alpozzo said, stressing that the strike could restart should no "long term solution" be found. Car ferries operated by the SNCM (National Maritime Corsica-Mediterranean company) are seen at docks in the port of Marseille in this March 31, 2014 file picture. Efforts by France's Veolia, the world's largest water services company, to divest its legacy transport arm and focus on its core business are snagged by a wrangle over the fate of one of the transport arm's assets, the near-bankrupt Corsican ferry operation jointly held with the French state. The SNCM saga weighs on Veolia's valuation, has destabilised its shareholdership and nearly cost Veolia's CEO Antoine Frerot his job earlier this year. With cumulative losses of 250 million euros and a European Commission order to repay 440 million euros of illegal state aid hanging over it, SNCM is not finding any buyers, and a union threat to start a new strike next week could ruin the summer season and push it over the edge. Veolia employees (L), the company which owns the contract for school busing in Boston, locks bus drivers (R) who walked off the job in the morning, out of a bus yard in Boston, Massachusetts October 8, 2013. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino vowed to punish school bus drivers who walked off the job on Tuesday in a labor action the city contended was illegal, and which even the drivers' union organization condemned. Some 33,000 public and private school students were left to find alternative routes to school on Tuesday after a union representing some 700 drivers and also represented by the United Steelworkers of America Local 8751 did not show up for work.
