The Wider Image: Migrant mother misses home but prays not to be sent back
As on every Sunday, the 33-year old Honduran mother bows her head at a neighborhood church. She has dressed her children, Jesus, 5, and Suany, 8, in their best clothes and implored them to sit quietly beside her. She prays that her husband, Jose, who was murdered back home, is "in a good place." She prays to be strong for her kids in this new country, to live long enough to see them grow up. She prays for the family members she left behind. Rivera views her new life with conflicting emotions. For their first year in the United States, she and the children were guests in a relative's house, and she constantly worried they were outstaying their welcome. Recently, she and her sister, who arrived from Honduras with her kids two months ago - also to seek asylum - rented a small apartment together. Rivera, Suany and Jesus share an inflatable mattress in a bedroom with her teenage niece. "We don't have a lot, but we are happy," she said. After walking thousands of miles north through Guatemala and Mexico, where last spring they sought protection in a caravan, the three asked for U.S. asylum in May 2018 at the port of entry near San Diego, California. They spent three weeks in U.S. custody, then convinced an immigration officials they had a "credible fear" of returning home. They were released pending court hearings to decide their fate - a process that could take years. REUTERS/Loren Elliott SEARCH "IRMA ELLIOTT" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. A Picture and its Story: Anger, sore eyes and a photograph on the streets of Brussels
Reuters photographer Yves Herman: "Usually, a golden rule for a news photographer covering a scene of angry confrontation is to get close, but not involved. Sometimes, though, it's hard to avoid. "Yellow vest" protests have in recent days spread to Belgium from France. I followed hundreds of people marching through Brussels on Saturday to demand lower fuel prices and better living conditions. They were blocked from reaching the government quarter by riot police using water cannon and tear gas. Some of the crowd hurled rocks and firecrackers at them. Police squads started surrounding protesters, sending in snatch teams to arrest individuals. As the march was organised on social media without approval from the authorities, police took the view that anyone involved could be detained and taken away. Most are quickly released without charge. When one young man was seized, a young woman with him rushed towards the line of police, shouting that he had done nothing wrong. She had no mask or helmet and nothing in her hands. She wasn't even wearing one of the fluorescent yellow vests adopted by the movement. As she yelled at a policewoman, another officer standing behind the front rank pointed and fired a pepper-spray gun, dousing the young woman in the face. The photo I took dramatically captured the white liquid's moment of impact and her anguished expression. She turned away crying and sat down on the road, her eyes and face inflamed. I had a bottle of eyewash as part of my own safety equipment. I put my camera down, asked her to look up and carefully dropped the soothing liquid into her eyes." The Wider Image: A journey on a caravan of misery
Poorer by the day, hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have concluded that escape is their only option. With the country's currency virtually worthless and air travel beyond the reach of all but elites, buses have become Venezuela's caravans of misery, rolling day and night to its borders and returning largely empty to begin the process all over again. For nine days, a reporter and a photographer from Reuters accompanied the migrants as they headed for what they hoped were better days in Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina. For nearly 5,000 miles, they rolled through some of South America's most spectacular landscapes, including the vertiginous Andean mountain range and the world's driest desert in Chile. But even though the Venezuelans were awed by the views whizzing by their window, their minds were mostly on the land they had left behind - and the uncertainty facing them in the lands ahead. Carlos Garcia Rawlins: "The bus station was like a funeral home. Families were weeping and hugging, saying their goodbyes. Everybody was sad and scared - the ones leaving because they were facing an uncertain future, and the ones staying behind because they were facing muggings, shortages of food and an even more uncertain future. I hoped that by sharing this journey with my fellow Venezuelans, I could help show the rest of the world what most of us are facing every day." A Picture and its Story: The battle for Mosul: urban warfare and civilian exodus
A view of a part of western Mosul, Iraq, May 29, 2017. Alkis Konstantinidis: "It was the second day of my assignment in Mosul and we were driving to join the Iraqi Federal Police forces at their frontline positions. The closer we got to our destination, the more obvious was the impact of the constant warfare. The cityscape was apocalyptic: demolished buildings, burnt cars tipped onto their sides, twisted masses of steel. We reached the frontline on what seemed a quiet day. But even if things appear calm, you have to be on alert about your surroundings. While moving fast from position to position, taking cover behind debris, I noticed a yellow car lying destroyed in the middle of the road ahead of us. I took a few wide-angle shots, which worked best as I was able to get the perspective of the street and the sweeping scale of the destruction. Not a single element of my frame was untouched by the battle. Later that day, I tried to imagine what this street - whose name I couldn't find out as no signs were left standing - would have looked like on a "normal" day some years ago. It appeared to be a market street; people would have crossed it in a hurry, darting between traffic. The mosque in the background would have called the faithful to prayer and it would have been full of different noises: car honks, shop-owners shouting to attract customers, music playing in coffee shops full of people. These everyday sounds had now been replaced by the heavy crump of mortars, artillery, helicopters and the clatter of gun battles. And the memory of a normal day seemed so distant." While moving fast from position to position, taking cover behind debris, I noticed a yellow car lying destroyed in the middle of the road ahead of us. I took a few wide-angle shots, which worked best as I was able to get the perspective of the street and the sweeping scale of the destruction.ÊNot a single element of my frame was untouched by the battle. Later that day, I tried to imagine what this street - whose name I couldn't find out as no signs were left standing - would have looked like on a "normal" day some years ago.ÊIt appeared to be a market street; people would have crossed it in a hurry, darting between traffic. The mosque in the background would have called the faithful to prayer and it would have been full of different noises: car honks, shop-owners shouting to attract customers, music playing in coffee shops full of people. These everyday sounds had now been replaced by the heavy crump of mortars, artillery, helicoptersÊand the clatter of gun battles. And the memory of a normal day seemed so distant."
