The Wider Image: 'We lost everything:' Grieving Beirut neighbourhood struggles to rebuild
In one of Beirut's poorest neighbourhoods, Karantina near the port, people are still reeling from the explosion that flattened homes and killed many neighbours who felt like family. Everyone knows everyone. Everyone cried when they recalled the explosion. A week later, the neighbours are struggling to find the money to rebuild, without help from the state in a city that was already deep in economic collapse. The warehouse explosion killed at least 172 people, wounded thousands and ravaged entire districts. It shattered walls and ripped out balconies in Karantina, a neglected part of the capital. The cluster of streets, with a slaughterhouse and a waste plant, saw one of the bloodiest massacres of Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war. Many said the blast did more damage in a few seconds than 15 years of war. With the wreckage at their doorstep once more, families who have spent decades in Karantina have camped out in their apartments. They sleep on the floor or on ripped couches, without doors or windows, not sure how to go on. REUTERS/Alkis Konstantinidis TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY SEARCH "KARANTINA NEIGHBOURHOOD" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Protests bring BeirutÕs abandoned Egg back to life
In the heart of Beirut's manicured downtown, something is stirring in a bullet-pocked concrete shell of a building known as "the Egg". The domed brutalist structure - once a cinema - was designed in the heady days of the 60s, badly damaged in the 1975-90 civil war, then abandoned, left to teenagers seeking a secret place for a drink or a smoke. Then two weeks ago, protesters started pouring into the streets, raging against the political elite and reclaiming unloved corners of their capital. Demonstrators walked into the echoing hall and started staging impromptu parties, photo shoots, lectures. Older residents came in to have another look at a landmark they had long dismissed as an eyesore. REUTERS/Alkis Konstantinidis SEARCH "LEBANON EGG" FOR THIS STORY. A house damaged by shelling is seen in the village of Zaitseve, Ukraine, February 26, 2019. There are not many people left in Zaitseve, a village on the front line that divides Ukraine between government-controlled territory and the enclave controlled by Russian-backed separatist forces. Troops are stationed in trenches outside Zaitseve and government trucks risk rebel fire to bring bread, coal, firewood and other goods along a dirt road. The Wider Image: In shadow of war, Ukrainians seek to vote for peace
There are not many people left in Zaitseve, a village on the front line that divides Ukraine. Destruction and damage are widespread after five years of conflict over eastern Ukraine between government forces and Russian-backed separatists. Around 13,000 people have been killed, a quarter of them civilians, according to the United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine. Troops are stationed in trenches outside Zaitseve and government trucks risk rebel fire to bring bread, coal, firewood and other goods along a dirt road. Employees from the state-run Oschadbank travel by armoured truck to a nearby checkpoint, to allow residents on both sides of the conflict to withdraw money. Some six hundred kilometres (400 miles) away in Kiev, President Petro Poroshenko has made standing up to Russia a central thrust of what has become a tough political battle for reelection. Voters say the conflict is the single biggest issue facing the country but struggle to identify who can best end it. REUTERS/Gleb Garanich SEARCH "ELECTION WAR" FOR THIS STORY.
