A view of salt collected from a pond at the Maras mines in Cuzco December 3, 2014. Salt has been obtained in Maras since pre-Incan times by evaporating highly salty local subterranean stream water. The water is intricately channelled through constructions, flowing gradually down onto several hundred ancient terraced ponds. A girl washes her hair with water on wash basin at residential area for migrant workers in Beijing
A girl washes her hair with water on a wash basin at a residential area for migrant workers in Beijing June 20, 2013. Most houses in the migrant workers' village do not have private bathrooms and toilets. For two decades, Chinese local governments have been able to ignore the problem of housing migrants, thanks to the makeshift villages and other arrangements that accommodate about 40 percent of migrants. China has pledged to double household incomes over the coming decade in a bid to close a wealth gap so wide it threatens social stability. Although the proportion of extreme poverty has fallen over recent decades, about 12 percent of the country's 1.3 billion people still live on less than $1.25 per day, according to a 2013 United Nations report. A boy loads gold rocks into a crushing machine at a local goldmine in Bagega village in northeastern state of Zamfara August 14, 2013. Nigeria's solid minerals remain untapped and largely unmapped, an anomaly in a region that is a growing source of materials such as iron ore, gold, diamonds, uranium and bauxite. The government wants to change that. Mines Minister Musa Sada aims to revive mining's contribution to the economy to 5 percent from its current 1 percent by 2015. Picture taken August 14, 2013.
