The entrance to the Geolide purification plant is seen in Marseille February 4, 2009. Buried 12 meters underground, beneath a bubble of futuristic glass, Geolide, which claims to be the largest such plant in the world, treats by biofiltration the 90 million cubic meters of waste water generated by the 16 communes connected to the network of the urban community of Marseille. Concrete poles are seen in water source of new water treatment plant in Baghdad's Sadr City
Concrete poles are seen in the water source of the new water treatment plant in Baghdad's Sadr City January 21, 2009. U.S. and Iraqi officials opened a water treatment plant in Sadr City slum on Wednesday three and a half years after they began it, a sign that the area is finally quiet enough for long promised construction work. The $65 million plant provides water for 200,000 people--just a tenth of the population of the vast slum on Baghdad's eastern outskirts where the need is most desperate for repairs to infrastructure wrecked by decades of war and sanctions. A view of a desalinated water plant built offshore the Argentina's Patagonian village of Puerto Piramides, March 18, 2008. A population of nearly 500 inhabitants and thousands of tourists who annually visit this town consume desalinated seawater processed by the plant. About 175,000 litres of desalinated seawater suitable for urban use and irrigation is pumped out every day. REUTERS/Enrique Marcarian (ARGENTINA)

Pumps take water from Pacific Ocean at desalinization plant of mining company Milpo near Chincha
Pumps take water from the Pacific Ocean at the desalinization plant of the mining company Milpo near Chincha February 19, 2008. Fresh water is an increasingly scarce resource in Peru, where most of the population lives along the desert coast. Rivers can be erratic and the glaciers in the Andes are melting because of global warming. Milpo, a Peruvian mining company, has installed Peru's first water desalinization plant, which takes water out of the Pacific Ocean and then pumps it up 6,000 feet into the Andes, where the purified water runs through Milpo's sprawling new Cerro Lindo mine and provides water to the mining town's 700 workers, who mine copper, zinc, and lead.
