The Wider Image: Baltimore pushes back against Trump while acknowledging problems
After U.S. President Donald Trump described Maryland's largest city as "a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess" and a "very dangerous & filthy place" last weekend, Baltimore resident Blondina Bean had mixed feelings about his tweets. Bean, whose 19-year-old son George Phillips was killed in a robbery attempt last year in Baltimore, said she was torn because she felt Trump was right about the majority-black city's high crime rate but wrong to use what she called racist language. Baltimore, a city of about 625,000 people known for its scenic harbor and historic neighborhoods in addition to its urban woes, is located roughly 40 miles (65 km) north of Washington. While many in Baltimore have blasted Trump's language - he also tweeted that "No human being would want to live there" - some black residents have acknowledged not only the city's crime problems but that its political leaders have failed to take enough action. A combination picture shows an entrance to Croat side of an ethnically divided school (top) and entrance to the Bosniak side of the same school in Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, September 29, 2018. Muslim Bosniak children and Roman Catholic Croats attend the same schools but still learn from different curricula - a practice devised as an interim solution after the war that has persisted despite a top court ruling it as discriminatory. The Wider Image: Displaced Bosnians blame politicians for their woes
More than 7,000 people from across Bosnia's ethnic divide, are still displaced from the 1992-95 war and reside in reception centres. Their fate is not high on the agenda of Bosnian politicians whose campaigning for Oct. 7 general elections is characterised by ethnically divisive rhetoric and opposing views of Bosnia's future - the very issues at the core of the war in which 100,000 people were killed and two million driven from their homes. Most families have only one room in which they sleep, prepare meals and even take baths. Many can use only makeshift wooden toilets shared by a dozen of people. After many delays, the government has set a 2020 deadline for the closure of these centres. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic SEARCH "BOSNIA DISPLACED" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES.
