Xiao Yang, president of the Supreme People's Court, delivers his work
report to the annual session of the National People's Congress (NPC),

2002. Xiao reported that courts across the country handled more than
340,000 criminal cases and sentenced over 150,000 people to jail terms
of five years and above, life imprisonment and to death. An increase of
