At Yangjia Hospital in a remote corner of China's eastern Zhejiang province, sufferers of dust lung spend much of their time hooked up to oxygen to treat lungs ravaged by work in a local mine, since shut down. Once equipped with high-tech machinery and 150 staff, the hospital has suffered from falling numbers and a lack of funding. With some of its windows broken and certain rooms abandoned, the hospital now treats just 30 patients. A doctor examines x-ray images of a young man during an army draft held at a school in Klong Toey, the dockside slum area in Bangkok April 7, 2013. Men over 21 must serve in the army, which has always been at the forefront of Thai politics but has come in for some rare criticism since 91 people died in anti-government protests in 2010. Those who volunteer serve six months, but others choose the annual lottery, which goes on for 10 days in recruitment centres around Thailand. Nobody wants a red card, which means serving for two years, with the chance of a posting in the dangerous south. Only those not considered physically capable of service, the mentally ill and those who have significantly altered their physical appearance - such as transgenders, who are more visible in Thai society than in many other nations - are exempt. Radiotherapist Kofi Kyei, 30, points at a tumour on an x-ray from a patient suffering from bladder cancer at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra April 24, 2012. Most of Africa's around 2,000 languages have no word for cancer. The common perception in both developing and developed countries is that it's a disease of the wealthy world, where high-fat, processed-food diets, alcohol, smoking and sedentary lifestyles fuel tumour growth. Yet there are an estimated one million new cancer cases sub-Saharan Africa will see this year - a number predicted to double to 2 million a year in the next decade. Picture taken April 24, 2012.
