An Israeli soldier on top of a tank on the Golan Heights December 15, behind a pock-marked building in a former Syrian town that was damaged in the Yom Kippur War in 1973 in the cental part of the Golan Heights. The Israeli army uses much of the Golan Heights as training areas for its armoured divisions. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouq al-Shara begin their historic meeting today to establish the framework for a comprehensive peace and the possible return of all or part of the Golan heights, the key issue in their formula for peace.
