When children began fainting at a Catholic-run school in a poor neighbourhood of Venezuela's capital Caracas, teachers set out to discover what was happening. They asked the 478 kindergarten and primary schoolchildren to draw or describe their most recent meals and also what they expected to eat next. The responses were shocking. Some had gone without breakfast and were also skipping other meals, or expecting to eat only bread, yucca or the local staple "arepa", a form of cornmeal flatbread. A parched yucca is seen in a garden in Porterville, California October 14, 2014. In one of the towns hardest hit by California's drought, the only way some residents can get water to flush the toilet is to drive to the fire station, hand-pump water into barrels and take it back home. The state's three-year drought comes into sharp focus in Tulare County, the dairy and citrus heart of the state's vast agricultural belt, where more than 500 wells have dried up. The U.S. Energy Department approved on January 10, 2001 the remote Nevada site of Yucca Mountain as the final resting place for the nation's vast amounts of radioactive waste, a plan immediately opposed by the Senate's top two Democrats. A repository would be built under the mountain, 90 miles from Las Vegas, and would store 70,000 tons of radioactive materials from the nation's nuclear power plants for about 10,000 years.

Three coca growers walk by a coca plantation near the village of Pozo Azul in Bolivar province in this March 4, 2001 file photo, which was fumigated by a Plan Colombia crop-dusting plane. Backed by $1 billion in mainly U.S. military aid, Colombian President Andres Pastrana's Plan Colombia is meant to destroy the plantations of coca leaf that provide the raw material for most of the world's cocaine. The plane fumigated the coca plants in the village of Pozo Azul, but also sprayed the banana, yucca and maize meant to feed many of the local families.
