The Wider Image: Caring for California's aging prisoners
California prison inmate Richard Arriola does not remember the digestion problems that drove him to the doctor on a recent morning, or details of the conviction for child molestation that sent him to prison at age 88. Arriola is one of about 18,400 inmates over the age of 55 in California prisons, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. It is a swelling population that has led authorities to take the first steps toward creating a dementia unit at the state's main prison medical facility in the San Joaquin Valley city of Stockton, Reuters has learned. The wing would mark a shift from California's earlier efforts to treat prisoners with cognitive decline, relying on inmate volunteers and a modest staff to help them rather than a more expensive medical unit. Reuters visited two California prisons recently to look at the challenges states face, as improved medical care, long sentences from tougher crime laws, and a steady increase of older adults entering prison has contributed to an extraordinary rise of elderly inmates. In California, seven percent of the state's 130,000 prisoners were over the age of 60 in 2016, the most recent year for which data is available, compared to just 1 percent 20 years earlier, according to a report by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Throughout the United States, states are grappling with similar challenges as prisoners age. REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson SEARCH "NICHOLSON AGING" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. The Wider Image: Transgender boxer fights for acceptance
Clad in a pink tank top and shorts, her face made up with rouge and red lipstick, transgender Muay Thai fighter Nong Rose Baan Charoensuk is a formidable opponent. Karun "Priewpak" Kaemlam, a male fighter, lost a thrilling five-round match to Rose, as she is generally known, earlier this month. "I wasn't able to fight her strength and big build," said Priewpak who suffered a gash above his right eye in the fight at Rajadamnern Stadium in the Thai capital. It was the second consecutive win for Rose in the revered Muay Thai arena after becoming the first transgender boxer to fight there last month. "Being a transgender doesn't mean that we're weak," Rose said after the fight. Born Somros Polchareon, Rose said she identified as a woman at an early age and began wearing makeup and a sports bra in the ring. In the rural towns where she has done most of her fighting, her appearance disconcerted some of her male opponents. "They would say they didn't want to fight with a gay person, as it would be embarrassing if they won or lost," she said. "I still face those insults, but I don't care about them." Thailand is widely seen as a paradise for gay and transgender people, but many say they are treated as second-class citizens. Transgender women figure on television, in beauty pageants and at hair salons and cosmetics counters, but they cannot change their gender designation on identity papers, despite a 2015 law against gender-based discrimination. The Wider Image: Beirut's racetrack hopes for winning streak again
Beirut's racecourse, which hosted monarchs and movie stars in its chic heyday and survived Lebanon's civil war, is struggling to secure its future after years of slow decline. The Hippodrome marked its centenary last year. But it has an aging clientele, must fend of private developers, and has lost revenue to illegal gambling. Now it is seeking a younger crowd and new investment from city authorities. On white plastic chairs in the concrete stands, amid the chatter of conversation and the gurgle of water pipes, most men watching the horses one recent Sunday were middle-aged or older. Many had patronised the Hippodrome since its 1960s heyday, when the city painted itself as the Paris of the Middle East and races drew a glittering high-society crowd. The Wider Image: Spain's centenarians on how to live to a hundred
With more than 17,000 people aged 100 or over, Spain is the country with the greatest life expectancy after Japan, OECD data and the latest population census shows. Over a year, Reuters photographer Andrea Comas interviewed and photographed Spaniards aged 100 or more across the country from the green-hilled northern region of Asturias to the Balearic island of Menorca. Average life expectancy at birth in Spain is 83.2, according to the latest OECD statistics made available in 2013, just a shade below the 83.4 years on average a Japanese newborn can expect to live. Most of the men and women Comas interviewed showed a zest for life and an interest in pastimes from amateur dramatics to playing the piano. Many also continued to carry out daily duties from farm work to caring for a disabled child. REUTERS/Andrea Comas SEARCH "CENTENARIANS" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. The Wider Image: My grandmother's last months
Reuters photographer Gaia Squarci recalls spending the last months of her grandmother's life with her in Italy: "My grandmother's life and mine overlapped for 27 years. I always called her "Nonna." Our age difference and profoundly contrasting values and way of thinking did not prevent us from developing a strong bond andÊ a relationship punctuated by mischievous games and moments of tenderness and humour. "You know, I was still young when you were born," she told me a few weeks before she died. "It's a little like we grew up together." At a lunch table a few months earlier in Milan, I learned from my mother, her daughter, that Nonna, 85, suffered from incurable liver cancer. Years before, she had already survived two bouts of breast cancer. Nonna would tell me time and time again that the news of my birth had given her the strength to fight. Even more heartbreaking than the fear of saying goodbye to her was the fact that my grandmother did not know how sick she was. My mother and aunt believed she could not bear the thought of a third bout with cancer. Because of this, one question haunted us until the day she died: Did we have theÊright to know the truth about her condition when she did not? Nonna spent most of her last months at home, surrounded by family. She reconciled with the idea of death and said she could slowly feelÊit coming. Doctors felt that surgery and chemotherapy would be pointless. On Oct. 11, 2015, the day Nonna died in Biella, Italy, I was across the world in Brooklyn, New York. I had spent five months with her, celebrating her life instead of mourningÊher death. I struggled with the concept of death and the abstract emotion we call grief. I found peace only when I returned to Italy to spread Nonna's ashes. REUTERS/Gaia Squarci SEARCH "ITALY CANCER" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "THE WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES. TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY

2016 Rio Olympics: BMX athlete bounces back
BMX cyclists might have the fastest first two seconds of any event in the Olympic Games - coming out of a gate on an eight-meter high wall and going from zero to 35 miles per hour in just two beats. For American racer and two-time Olympian Connor Fields, those two seconds account for 75 percent of his training and often determine if he can win the race which often lasts less than 40 seconds. "We work our butts off and I think we have one of the most difficult sports in the Games because we require so many different skills," said Fields. At the London Olympics in 2012, Fields was the No. 1 seed in the final at just 19 years of age, the youngest racer in the field. He crashed, finished seventh and as he describes it "at 19 it is hard not to seem like the end of the world." Now 23, he has more balance in his life and keeps things in perspective.
